You don't have to give something up.  You can add a good work or deed to your everyday life, something that will benefit you or others.  Sometimes that's more of a sacrafice.

Patsy, didn't you give up smoking for lent a few years ago, or was that new years?  By the way, you are still smoke free right?

I was forced to give up cigarettes due to my health, and think I am going on my 6th
Year of being smoke free! Even lent wouldn't have convinced me, but possibly dying early
Did the trick.

Well said!  Givinig up some of ones time to help others is always a good idea.
