I am very tired of going out in the alley after the primadonnas go through.Small papers and bits of garbage scattered about.Garbage containers are never put back in there proper place,some are left out in the alley.God for bid,that all small articles left next to the garbage container be picked up,some are others are just left.What I'm referring to are articles under 25lbs. why pick up some and leave others? our alley is starting to look like shit.Yes there are some low lives who don't follow the rules,but why leave such mess? I get sick when I get my bill for garbage removal!
Part of the blame should go to these stupid trucks. People throw loose garbage in their can, it's dumped into the front bucket, and then it's brought to the top of the truck and dumped inside of it. There's nothing covering the garbage in the front bucket and the wind grabs everything loose and blows it all over. Who's the genius that designed a garbage truck like this? Bring back the old trucks with the guy riding on the back.
Are we through with the pick-up of yard waste ? Got 6 bags they didn't take this week.
We have had the same issue for a few weeks! With this warm weather one would think they would have some common sense and extend the date of last pick up. I get so tired of the neglect,sometimes they take articles sometimes they don't so the residents just leave the articles in the alley. Cicero makes sure there is nothing left in the alleys and is picked up promptly,I am waiting for the day when the people from waste management come with white coat to pick up our garbage.We have had a rat problem for years I wonder why??
Well, I'm not having the problems you have in your area. Neighbors have been good and if something does pop up I call the 800 number, but that's pretty much useless on weekends.
So, does anyone know the cut off date, cause I'm way behind !
Last Monday was a holiday ! Maybe they're just 1 day behind. Hope so.
Yard waste starts on April 1 and ends on November 30.

It's normal for us to have plastic bags,papers, smashed up frozen food trays,etc. after WM has been through. Last week, they left our garbage container 3 doors down...still wondering how they hell that happened....

I have called the city a few times after a few people left couches, mattresses, etc out and they sat there for a few weeks. What happens is that Public Works picks them up and then the ones who left it out get fined around $200 for the special PW pickup. I don't care. Screw that. I don't feel like looking at an old beat up couch for weeks on end and then God knows what will start living in there. All it takes is a call to PW or WM to come do a special pick up but some residents are too lazy to do that. Well guess what? Some of us are sick of the laziness and lack of pride and respect for this city.

Start with the building department, not public works. That is how I have gotten best results so far.
And I think it's truly the generation of not caring, not being respectful and being self-centered. A few weeks ago, I had to run to the currency exchange on Cermak and Home. In front of me was a woman in her pajamas. They didn't "look like", they WERE. Later I saw her shopping at Meijer. No matter how much of a lazy ass day I am having, I manage to get dressed before I go somewhere, anywhere. To me, it's a respect for others. I walk down the street and see empty bottles, papers, fast food bags,etc and I pick them up. I try to do my part to take some sort of pride in my block. Hell I called a few weeks on the people who rent the house across from us because their grass was well above my ankles. Yeah I know they are renting but if they don't have a mower then hire someone. It's not hard.
People can say what they want but this city is dirty. It's a combination of people just renting and people who just don't care. Makes it hard for us who do.
They have missed my yard waste pickup every other week since late September. I called on Saturday and they are going to pick up on Monday. I had to connect to the commercial line because it was the weekend. Yard waste pickup continues until December 31 as confirmed by the city and waste management.

This spring, I have 5 large bags of yard waste very neatly stacked in front of my bins. I didn't realize that WM had two trucks (three, actually) and thet the guy who empties the bins is not the same truck that collects yard waste (though thinking about it for just a second, it makes perfect sense)...
...anyway, the first guys tossed all of the bags of yard waste in front of the garage door, rather haphazardly. I called WM. Not only did they have a guy there to get the yard waste within 15 minutes, later that afternoon a supervisor stopped by the house to apologize, and make sure everything was okay with us.
Their customer service is top-notch.

Last Monday was a 'holiday' -- but per Waste Management it was not for them and they were picking up on normal schedule. I called because they picked up everyone else's trash/recyclables/yard waste except ours[[and yes - bill is paid. We didn't even get garbage pick up last week. I called them and let them know that our entire block and the next one over got missed. They came out the next day and parked in the front of our house. The guy walked to the alley, brought our can to the truck to empty, put it back and left. Morons. There's overflowing garbage all down the alley.
(The only reason that I couldn't get to him when he was out there is because I was on the phone with the plumber)

And they will just keep piling it in to the point where the lids don't close and the bags are all over. If we happen to have a lot of garbage, we will keep it in the garage until garbage day and then put it out. It's rare that we have THAT much but if we can't close the lids, we don't put it out.
The amount of garbage some houses have is insane but that also most likely means overcrowding.
I just still laugh when I think that the WM guy didn't even pull the truck into the alley. He actually got out and emptied our garbage "old school style"

Some large items, WM won't take. You have to call Public Works for a special pickup.Oh and that costs extra $ too ::)
I'm thinking the cost would be passed on to homeowner?is this a flat fee or based on size,quantity? When I would all about articles left in the alley the town would never say anything about a fee.
We had a couch to throw away and PW had to take it since WM wouldn't and it cost us $90, this was about 2 years ago so things could have changed.

Although, a few months back, the people in the house across the alley from us jumped ship on their house and left a couch, chairs and table out and WM didn't take it. at there for 2 weeks until I called the city and PW came out to take it. The guy I talked to said that they would jut get a ticket for overflowing garbage and a fine for them having to pick up. Of course like I said, they just left the house so who knows who will be stuck paying that...

What on earth is going on?no garbage pick up this week? What are they afraid to tackle our alleys? What would be wrong with changing to another hauler and we pay per bag? Went to city hall,to early I guess no one in so I was given a toll free number 1-800-796-9696.After a long wait,I was asked If my neighbors garbage was also not picked up? I asked if she wanted to hold on while I would go walk down the alley to check?Oh! I am not asking you to do that she replied,maybe your alley was nor plowed?I told her I saw the trucks in the alley,and a Sherman Tank could go through!!!!This lady was clueless,so why pick on her?The garbage will be picked up by tomorrow noon.At one time they would have a supervisor talk to you ,not any more!

Malarkey! Our alley was clear and neither trash nor recyclables were picked up last week; but, then, we've been bipassed several others times -- during the summer!! Tried to call WM - got a song and dance and even an insinuation that our trash was picked up and that I was mistaken...nope, it was our trash still in our tote...
I called numerous times during the summer for no pick up as well. Each time they would ask if the rest of our block was picked up. I don't pay for the rest of the block's garbage to be picked up. I pay for OUR garbage to be picked up.
After several calls I was told a supervisor would call me. Finally today success no call except for a computer asking if my garbage was picked up.
So far so good up here...
I asked a connection of mine about the city calling WM and he said that the city never, ever would call and tell WM not to pick up. He said that a few people called when a holiday fell on a designated garbage day and WM told them that the city instructed them to pick up the day before and he said absolutely not true. So, he said that while the city is messed up in many ways (haha), this one they cannot be blamed for. This is all WM lying to the people who call. And my source has no reason to sugar coat or lie for the city so I believe him, as he has been right on everything I have checked about in the past.
I am curious if they are going to renew their contract.
My area has had a few glitches but for the most part it's been good.
After the summer,missed pick ups cans left in the middle of the alley,now the same in the winter,time to shop.We have enough issues with the residents and over flowing cans and other articles put out in the alley.
Garbage cans in the middle of the alley,some not emptied,and one would think if there is a small object next to the cans it would be picked up,hell no! Pieces of wood that were neatly put on the can is left on the ground to make a bigger mess.If lucky when Wm is called they apologize and promise to correct the problem ,don't count on it. WM has been in Berwyn to long,time for a change.I even would like to see a consumption fee per bag rather then a flat fee.Any thoughts ?
I'm happy with WM. It's got to be the guy on your route. We're not having these constant problems. During the summer we sometimes get neglected by the yard waste guy but after a few calls he gets his act together.
Keep calling WM, eventually/hopefully it'll be corrected. It helps if your neighbors call too.
Our WM service is also just fine. Our drivers are hard working and competent. We tip them at Christmas and often give them a bottle of water in the Summer. Seems to me they work their asses off. I think WM should double rates for people that bitch. As for per bag pricing, can you imagine the mess there would be with folks trying to shove a weeks worth of trash in one bag so they could beat the system?
With the rat problem in Berwyn,over crowded buildings,imagine if someone did not complain? But I guess blight is in the eye of the beholder.
Once again, this is a case of people not seeing the entire city. Maybe WM is perfect is some areas but far from it here! This city lacks consistency with everything: plowing, trash pickup, landscaping...
No way we would tip our WM drivers. If they were like the old school garbage collectors who got out and manually emptied each can,I could see it. But these guys never get out and when it's pickup day, you can always tell because the cans are scattered all over the alley and there's garbage/papers flying all over. Between that and having to call because they didn't pick up? Forget that. We are overpaying for garbage pick up the way it is.
And it was mentioned about people trying to shove a week's worth of trash in one bag (per bag pricing). Well again take a drive around and you see that anyway. It's called overcrowding.

All cities have a rodent population. In the 25 yrs. I've lived here we've had 1 big push to bait for rodents and that was around O'Connor's administration. It worked; now we're on maintenance. The most troublesome areas are always near restaurants and food stores.
The problem is no worse today than it was in the 50's, it's just more of your exagerations and complaining.

Here we go again! lets now hear the truth,rats became a big problem when the garbage dump was half ass filled and turned into Bel-Air Drive In on 31St. and Cicero Ave. Hawthorne in Cicero was very bad,many young children were bitten as the slept.The population moved west into parts of Berwyn,the south end already had a problem which came from the river and sanitary district.The rat problem was much worse in the 50's!! they are under control now,but how can one tell?Coming home late at night occasionally rats can be seen running when the head lights hit them in the alley.O'Connor was not the only Mayor to poison rats,lets go back to the 70'sand 80's.Call it why you want Prove me wrong!!!!!

We give to our postman because he is very good-he would be out in weather like tonight delivering. We get a lot of packages and he always makes sure that he puts them in the yard and if it's raining/snowing, he will put them in plastic bags,etc. He always takes a lot of extra care with our delivery so he deserves it.

Well, garbage is delayed on our block. WM truck kept getting stuck and spinning his tires and now he is completely stuck and can't move. Nice.
The driver should be fired for getting stuck. Waste Management should pick up our garbage for free for 5 years because of that guy.
Took him about 10 minutes but he finally got out ::)

We bought a house in Berwyn a little over a year ago, and until recently had no WM issues. Lately WM refuses to pick up our yard waste for some reason. We came home a couple weeks ago and found they had hurled our yard waste can (the yard waste can THEY gave us to use) over our fence into our yard. Why, angry we left it with yard waste in it?? We were confused about that so ever since we've been putting it in tidy yard waste bags, making sure they aren't overflowing or heavy to lift, etc. And they have just been leaving them each week, not bothering to take any of it. So last week we called WM and the lady we spoke to was super apologetic, and she sent someone out to collect it that day. We figured that was the end of it, but we just got home now and saw they didn't bother to take our 2 bags of yard waste yet again today. Is this par for the course with them, is this a personal thing, etc?? Does WM really suck that bad?? Other than that, we love living in Berwyn so far.

There's no excusing their actions but, I don't think that's a yard waste container. Are you sure it isn't for your re-cyclables ?
They provided me with a container for garbage and a re-cyclable container. You're on your own for yard waste.
We do have one for recyclables and another for garbage. They also gave each of us in our alley a green container for yard waste, some of my neighbors' cans even say 'yard waste' on them though ours doesn't. But since they tossed it over our fence we have just been using yard waste bags, so there's no excuse for not taking those.
To make it easier go to or call city hall and ask where to get stickers for each of your cans.I provide my own yard waste container,clearly marked.They will only take yard waste in bags marked as such,be sure to put a pretty bow and not to heavy for the fellow.WM is one of the worst haulers!!! Every time they come through our alley cans are left all over, never put back where they came from.Pieces of paper,plastic bottles are just left,heaven help the driver if he should bend down and pick up what he dropped!!!!!
Good idea about stickers, thanks... and yeah we kept the bags light and easy for them to lift but I think you're right, they just suck :P

It likely wasn't WM who gave you a yard waste container. Regardless, if they're not grabbing your yard waste, call WM. 866-570-4702

I'm not sure who provides the yard waste stickers, the city? I was given a stack of them by a neighbor when I moved in.
I went to city hall for the stickers,Wm was putting orange ones on cans with worn stickers.I wonder if they would get away with these childish games in lets say Riverside? I can tolerate the orange stickers,but at least pick up the dropped garbage and put the cans back where they belong. Driving through our alley afterward is like driving on an obstacle course.
'Childish games' pretty much sums it up. After calling WM several times they confirmed our yard waste should have been picked up by them, and to be fair they were very apologetic each time and couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally today, they actually picked up our yard waste. But this time, they chose not to empty our recycling can for some reason, despite always emptying it before. I guess for some reason WM is full of petty childish a-holes who decide to be pissy and hold grudges and/or just not do their jobs. Guess we'll just have to call them every time they don't pick up our stuff, which gets old. Oh well, what can you do?
I will notify city hall of WM not picking up what they are supposed to,then I call WM.Took them five weeks and numerous calls to empty an over flowing can from a vacant building.Their employees are nothing but a pain in the ass! City hall does nothing!

WM used to be better/efficient/conscientious. Now - not so much IMO. At least twice a month they do not pick up up either our trash or recyclables. Granted, it is rare that either tote is completely full -- but we are paying for weekly pickup-right? During warm/hot weather the left over trash is a stinking problem. I call - always told they will pick up following week. While not acceptable - seems no recourse or remedy; they will not, "...can not...come back same day to pick up". Brick wall vs taxpaying residents. Phooey!
Garbage spilled in the alley or even left in cans draws animals,Berwyn has had a rat problem,some years worse than others,as do surrounding Suburbs.WM is not helping the problem,along with the ignorant that leave open cans of over flowing garbage.When Wm comes through the alley the driver will not take or pick up anything he doesn't want to.Plastic bottles blow out of the can or truck are left,also papers.Never do the cans go back where they belong,at times just getting through the alley is a obstacle course.
What I can't understand is that many other cities and towns use WM and have no problems, get the "spring sweep" every year, etc. So why does Berwyn get screwed?
I guess residents complaints mean something,and the towns do react.
I'm sick as well when I open my water and garbage bills on my two and three unit buildings. Waste management is charging essentially the rate of three single family homes on three apartments when there is only one address. That coupled with Rahm Emanuel raising the water rates on the water the suburbs buy from Chicago and it's getting impossible to keep up any more. My quarterly bills are getting to the point where they are almost $500!!!!

They're generating just as much garbage as any homeowner. It's not done by address.
