Wake up Berwyn!our alleys are a mess, just go to Cicero Bl'vd Manor and observe how neat and clean the alleys are. What are they doing better then Berwyn.

Obviously, Cicero has a better sanitation outfit. I bet if you organized a circle of local people to investigate you might be able to interest a media syndicate in the story.

I disagree.  My alley is just fine and dandy.  What specific alley are you referring to?

Also, Berwyn is fixing up alleys in parts of Berwyn.  There have been pictures on Facebook of the progress.

Finally, what do the alleys in Cicero look like outside of the Manor area of Cicero?  The Manor area of Cicero has always gotten the lion's share of support because that's where most of the politicians in Cicero live.  What do the alleys in Cicero look like in the area around  Cicero Avenue and Roosevelt Road?

If he gives you a location, it will be the first time on BTF that he answers a question with a clear, factual answer.

There would be way to long of a list to type in all the bad alleys, just  walk or drive down the east and west streets.Start with south Berwyn south of Odgen!!! I am aware there are  a few good ones, not many.

 Berwyn Senator,

Go check out the recently re-paved alley between Oak Park and Euclid and between 13th street and 14th street.  It looks fantastic.

Here is a picture from Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10212548890257813&set=gm.1205990339527160 (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10212548890257813&set=gm.1205990339527160)

I also saw repaving being done on an alley that goes into Pershing road.  FYI, one of the comments on Facebook stated that the city is repaving alleys as money permits and if/when they are able to get grants.

Here's another Senator - Check out the newly repaved alley between Oak Park Avenue and Grove from 38th street to 39th street.

I'm coming to the conclusion that Berwyn Senator doesn't actually live in Berwyn. Which is fine, except he keeps making negative pronouncements about the state of the city, and I think that's bad for Berwyn.

He says the alleys are terrible. Which ones? He won't say. He says there are Berwyn bars where all sorts of horriblenesses occur. Which bars? He cannot name them. Ask him where the most dangerous, crime-y intersection in town is, and he'll say it's....Harlem and Cermak. He says he visits Cermak Rd. and thinks it looks like "shit," which is a demonstrably absurd statement.

And he misspells "Cermak."

I hope that Berwyn Senator, wherever he is, can bring himself to write more thoughtfully about Berwyn, and back up the negative statements he continues to make that run down the town. But there is no evidence thus far that he's actually capable of doing that.

By my count there are over 600 alleys in Berwyn.  What would you have the city do?  Would you be willing to pay extra property taxes to repave all 600 or so alleys?  Even then, how many years do you think it would take to re-pave 600 alleys?

FYI, I have travelled around Berwyn and I don't see the alley problem that you seem to see, including the alleys south of Ogden.

Our alleys were good, nothing wrong and they were repaved anyway with a cheap job!  I am aware its hard to admit or just don't know any better but blight in on the upswing 600 alleys? interesting! money is pissed away on bullshit. Berwyn does have blight inspectors? How does Cicero do it? I can remember the clean and neat Berwyn, people were proud of their property, very obvious most do not know the difference. Statements made are just to be contrary to the fact that the truth is the truth. The your eyes with you when in Berwyn!

So be it! Years back there were many Czech people and Berwyn flourished! Not that Berwyn does not have its good points and is getting better. But one must caution! lack of cleanliness and blight is a sign of,Who the fuck cares! Homes that are cared for indicates how the owners care for themselves! Take your eyes with you and look around is anything being done to correct blight? I am well aware of foreclosures and the people who just leave their property become neglected before leaving, what is the excuse for garbage all over the alleys weeds not trimmed.Paint is cheap!!!! There was a time if your grass was too long you were cited, paint peeling,or just being messy. This effects home prices! So screw old Berwyn it is ok to be a pig!!!!!! Is this what you call better?

And we all know what B.S. means when he makes a distinction between Czechs who lived in Berwyn in the past and the people who live in Berwyn today. B.S. is telling you something about the particular way he looks at Berwyn.

You have no shame and are completely shameless.  Whatever alley he spoke of did indeed exist at one time and no longer does exist.  We will all be dead and gone at one point and it does not give anyone the right to give some worthless shit to claim his worthiness.

The repaved alleys do exist in the north east part of Berwyn. The ash fault has been cracked, garage aprons broken up. When I go there I get sick because the original alleys were cement and fine.Go west of where the new alleys are being put in  South Berwyn these were replaced several years ago for no reason they were cement worked fine.A company from Texas did the work?why! Remember when the young fellowl was killed on Odgen Ave. These people care about Berwyn wondering why such bad materials and workmen ship was excepted.Better off no to have been done at all.By the way Berwyn was never all White town! I dare you to prove me wrong.Maybe you're thinking of Cicero.Remember I have been here all my life along with many family and friends.

More nonsense from B.S. Can't name a single alley. Not one. Can't decide whether his issue is with the "ash fault" (what is "ash fault"?) used in the alleys or the residents he claims treat the alleys poorly. Who is the problem? The answer is always the same: Not Berwyn Senator!

I never said Berwyn was all white. What I said was that B.S. misses white Berwyn.

The new alleys that I saw re-paved in the last few months (the one between Oak Park and Euclid in the 1300 block and the one between Grove and Oak Park in the 3800 block) were paved with cement with bricks in the middle. They were also paved with a downward slope to the middle of the alley.

I did wonder why they put bricks in the middle of the alley rather than the usual mini-gutter to drain the rain.  It looks more up-scale with the bricks in the middle but I do wonder about the drainage.

The bricked part is porous and meant to let water be absorbed by the earth, hence the green alley connotation.

It is interesting, though, how some alleys - I think newer ones - slope toward the middle, and have that channel to move it toward the street, yet others like mine peak in the middle, pushing the water toward the garage aprons.

Senator, I think some of the worst alleys I've seen in Berwyn are south, just east of Proksa Park.  I'd be afraid to use a snow blower in some of them for fear of ruining it.

My alley is generally pretty good.  It's got one rough patch, but overall it's not bad.

Mine is what you would expect when you are sharing it with the Archdiocese of Chicago.  There are several sewers that need to be addressed, actually falling apart when you look down them and the city has been informed.  No answer as yet.

If B.S. is "humiliated," there's no evidence of it. My point is that he's spent a week on this thread---and in other threads before then---grousing about bad alleys and has yet to provide an example of one.

"The sad thing is the people that run the [Houby Day parade] don't care to spend any money on  good Czech entertainment."

"I wonder have all these illegals come up to our living standards, improving themselves or has this country lowered its standards to appease the illegals."

One thing we all admire about old-timers is how no-nonsense they are. They have the courage of their convictions, and they express them full-throatedly! Let us all aspire to be more like Mrs. Northsider, BTF's advocate for old-timers! When people present assertions without evidence, she is there to support-distance herself from them! When people express bigoted views, she stands proud and ready to support-denounce them!

Will you, too, plant your feet firmly and agree-disagree in the face of ignorance and bigotry? Then you are ready to be a Berwyn old-timer.

I'm just saying maybe we need to be nicer to the old-timers who have stayed here throughout the years.  Yes, it's not their Berwyn anymore but they could have got up and left like so many other people.  The people who bought thinking Berwyn was the next best thing to Oak Park without the high taxes and then decided the schools weren't good enough for their little offspring and then got out of here as fast as they could when their kids got to school age.  Or the ones who stayed in Berwyn until their kids got to high school age and then couldn't wait to sell.  Or the ones who just thought Berwyn would become another Oak Park with time - that's the one that really makes me laugh and then sold when they realized this was Berwyn and would always be Berwyn.  I think one of the things that kept this town from going to hell in a handbag was the fact that so many old-timers stayed until they either died or went into the nursing home.  I guess now it's time to run them off too because they are too old and set in their ways.

Also, please stop treating B.S. like some weak, reedy flower who cannot bear the least criticism. As he has told us many, many times, he is a highly educated man, in possession of a master's degree, who knows the facts about Berwyn better than anyone. If I'm asking him questions, it's because I think we can all benefit from the wisdom that B.S. can deliver.

That's a bunch of BS when it comes to the grade schools.  They only recently asked for more money within the past few years and the last referendum was passed.  As for the high school, even the most progressive of Berwynites has an issue with District 201 and the way they do their business.

It must be a bottomless source of frustration for the old-timers that this mismanaged D201 has been constantly in the control of...non-old-timers?

Why do you keep changing the subject? Telling others to start another subject. Answer the questions about white Berwyn, where do old timers come into play?

Reminder: B.S. can make a fool of me in an instant if he gives the location of just one blighted alley in Berwyn.

District 201 is in control of people I am sure you don't want spending YOUR dollars.  Under the thumb and nail of total assholes whom I'm sure get together on occasion to make fun of most of people who (1) complain about them,  (2) Actually have some evidence they have done wrong and (3) Will wait for the government to come after them.  I think that is not to far off that (3) will wait for the government to come after them to prevail.  Yikes, I can't wait for all of these people to be prosecuted.  It will be a total shit show that I will absolutely be in the stands to cheer for.

What have the old-timers done over the years to contend against this horribleness?

They have shown up and been there.  Whow, what  a word game we have created.  I am always ready to play.  Actually my husband has to look to me for finality in these word games.

Why did they bother? You said old-timers think it's funny that people try to change things because "Berwyn will always be Berwyn."

Cicero has always run 201,Berwyn has had token board members. What makes you think seniors had something to do with 201? Who picked the board president?

If seniors are the problem, them I would assume none would want their wealth?

Again, please stop changing the subject. This is a thread about Berwyn alleys.

Shouldn't you do the same? What do seniors have to do with alleys or any of the subjects you have changed. Start new if you can't answer.

It troubles me that I have to explain all this to a highly educated man such as yourself, but let me try.

This has always been a thread about blighted alleys in Berwyn. When you failed to present evidence of a single blighted alley in Berwyn---even though you started the thread---I started thinking through some connections to your past posts. That led me to believe that you're really just grousing about what you have forever groused about here, either sideways or directly: brown people and immigrants in Berwyn. Mrs. Northsider entered the conversation, mainly, best as I can tell, out of pity for you: She agreed that you've said a lot of bigoted things on this site but that you should get some kind of pass because you're an "old-timer" and set in your ways and might get your feelings hurt if the matter were pressed too hard. (It's hard to tell whether she endorses your bigotry or not, though; she's talking out of both sides of her mouth on that one.) To her point, all I really wanted to say is that "old-timers" are nothing to celebrate given the conditions of the schools that they have managed on their watch. (Of course, schools are just one example of this.)

But---again, one more time---this thread would not be encompassing bigotry and "old timers" if you presented the location of a single blighted alley in Berwyn.

I hope that clarifies things.

I think you're blowing smoke out of your face! Calling me  bigot! you don't have any idea what your even talking about as I have stated in the past I grew up in the arts and have remained so. Many people of color have lived in Berwyn for years without issue some longer then I. So if I have an issue with this myself and many others would not have remained,I never brought up the subject you did, this must bother you.Maybe you don't even live in Berwyn? Cut the shit about the schools and seniors! My grandparents, parents, myself, and children all went to Berwyn schools they were fine then. What goes on presently was not created by seniors!!!! If you think so prove it!
