Glad to see the "get rich quick" bug is taking a thrashing at the hands of the market.  Maybe it will knock some sense into people.  We had a flipper buy near me and when he couldn't sell for the handsome profit he expected after his rehab, he just rented it.  On a 1-10 scale, his rehab was about a 6 -- not bad but it certainly didn't add $100k in value like he thought it did.  While I'm glad he fixed up what was previously an eyesore, I can't help but think if normal home owners bought it in a normal market, we would be a lot better off.  The tenants aren't bad people and I have no problem with them but, as renters, they don't have the same interest in cutting their grass, cleaning up rubbish, weeding, or developing ties to the neighborhood like we do.

Speaking of people who don't mow their grass, etc., is there anything to be done about this? We have an empty home on our street, was on the market with you, Tony, I think and suddenly off the market. Now it's just tacky looking. Do I have to find the owners, then sic the police/city on them, or what? I would think the across-the-street neighbors who keep their yard lovely would have made a stink by now, but still the lawn and weeds grow. Because I park in the garage through the alley, I don't have to see it every day, but when I do see it, it hurts my eyes.

Call city hall.  Contact either the building department or Jean Marie Hajer.  You don't need to find the owner.

I live just a few blocks away.  I'm not happy with the situation either.  I do not have it listed. I did, and when I did I tried to budjet lawn maintenance with the sellers.

That's about all I can say.

I remember. I know it's not you. If you live close, do you have any pull with city hall to get them to take care of their lawn. or would that be unethical, since you used to have it listed?

Tal,

The city is pretty swift when they get a complaint.  I bet if you call them they already know about it and are either trying to reach the owner or they have gone as far as sending someone to cut it and put a lien on the property.
