Title: 2/12/08 Council
Post by: OakParkSpartan on February 12, 2008, 11:21:11 PM
Well, the best offer I've heard from any alderman in 2+ years...Ald. Lovero offered his sausage to any Police, Fire or Public Works employee at Oktoberfest 2008.  Thanks Bobby, but happily, I don't work for any of those departments.  :o

Council approved the Superblock agreement.
Argued with the mayor about charging the BDC for police coverage at the depot events (city funds BDC, BDC pays city...what is the point??).
Argued more about the budget.
Deferred discussion of the retail overlay to COW.
Approved purchase of street sweeper.
Approved purchase of either two or four snow plows (the actual plow, not the entire truck).
Passed a bungalow double-wide.
Approved a rope ladder instead of a second entrance for a house.

BTW, for those that don't know...The DCOB sells italian sausage sammich's at Oktoberfest...I know that's what you guys were thinking...

Brian left out the best part of the meeting...  The part that makes me happy I'm in Berwyn.  The new FD Chief, Asst. Chief, and new DC were sworn in. To much applause I might say....

Ok. So we all know I'm biased...

If there was any doubt about the rencent promotions in the FD, you only had to be in council chambers this evening...

I'm figuring 4/6 of the FD was there...  in dress uniform...  to see O'Halloran, Simek, and Swade get sworn in.  Long timers can't remember the last time they've seen that many FF there.  Even the guys on duty were there (with radios in hand in case they had a call) cause their (black shift) DC was getting promoted.  [And if you'd like to make an issue about that...  they would have gotten to the truck/engine in the same amount of time than if they'd been in the house.]  The FD was there in full force to show their support of Mayor O'Connor's appointments.

There was positive energy in the council chambers.

It was nice to see.

p.s. - I have it on good authority that our Mayor considered looking at outside candidates, but he felt that the FD was a "family" and the next Chief should come from inside.

It was not an issue of a rope ladder out the window as a second exit but that the house was a legal nonconforming two unit in a single family zone and that they wanted to put up a deck and a separate entrance for the upstairs apartment. That is a zoning board thing as you can't make any changes to a legal nonconforming without going to zoning first, that's how the ordinance reads. The alderman who usually has his head "in the sand" was making an issue of that unit only having one exit. There was no work going on in that apt. so a second exit did not have to be added, that is stated in the local building code. The rope ladder thing had absolutley nothing to do with the zoning issue, it was just thrown in by the alderman who didn't know any better nor really wanted to. It's like saying " you can go ahead and build your garage but you have to paint the handrail on your stairs first." If it wasn't for the fact that it was an apartment there, everything would be alright. When you build an entire second floor addition with bedrooms, you are not expected to don't have to put in two exits there. You have windows in each bedroom which is recognized as your emergency exits. Segwick condos on Stanley all have only one exit, granted it is sprinkled, but you can be traped five stories up in time of a fire, waiting for the fire depatment with a ladder because you can't get out due to only one exit. Just wanted to clarify.

All that which you stated was discussed a meeting or two ago, which I'd forgotten about.

Such decisions shouldn't be ones that make a citizen feel uneasy about their city.
This being Berwyn, and supposing these are the proper hires, I'm just happy Berwyn didn't drop the ball.

Great.  PW requested more - they got it.  Now the whiners can shut up.  If there's still a problem, the blame will be squarely upon PW for not requesting more.........such as more workers as confused had suggested.

Without an agenda, he's got to make friends and get people to trust him blindly.

I don't care.  An apartment (separate residence) vs. a 2nd story bedroom with regards to exits?

It should required and different, more stringent rules applied in the spirit of keeping "single family zones" as just that.

Too bad.  Boo Hoo!

At the last MAC meeting the mayor said the agreement w/ the developer was that they had to start making progress on the bank before they could ask for other permits or something along those lines.

Havent been to one in a long time. They sound completely different than the Berwyn meetings i read about here. Cicero meetings i have been too are very organized and very professional. They also seem to have tackled issues in private and by the time they get to the public meeting they know where they are going. I think the proof lies in the incredable amount of redevelopment going on here. About a quarter of a billion dollars. You don't get this much done with your leaders constantly bickering back and forth.

Here is the story about the budget in the Life newspaper.  Who were the NO votes?  This is the first time that I can remember the budget getting passed before March.

  City approves $81M 2008 budget

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Berwyn Life

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Berwyn, IL -
The City Council approved an $81 million budget for this year at a council meeting this week.

The budget projects that the city will take in about $74 million in revenue.

The city is estimating it will take in about $3.6 million more into its general fund this year than last because of a 5 percent property tax increase. It also expects to see a $1.4 million decrease in revenue from real estate transfer taxes.

A significant change was seen in the police department's budget, which increased by $1.2 million to provide for higher salaries due to raises, mid-year hires in 2007 and this year's planned hire of two replacement police officers to fill the positions vacated by promotions.

"It's a nice clean budget that moves the city forward," said Budget Committee Chairman and 3rd Ward Alderman Mark Weiner.

Some aldermen said they were not prepared to vote on the budget at Tuesday's meeting.

The vote was split 4-4, with Mayor Michael O'Connor breaking the tie in favor of the budget.

Why were some Alderman not prepared to vote on the budget?
Title: Re: 2/12/08 Council
Post by: EC on February 14, 2008, 07:31:48 AM
The no votes were 1,2,6 & 7. Some aldermen thought there was too much information to sift through in a short amount of time and therefore felt that they could not vote effectively.

Good to hear, cause you've basically been a dipshit up to this point.  Striving to be like me is a step forward.  You probably won't be able to reach my level of discourse right away, but don't let that discourage you.  It's obvious that your writing skills have been neglected, but with a little practice, you can improve.  Perhaps try reading a few books, magazines, or newspapers for examples of proper prose.  And you might actually learn something and have your horizons expanded.  Double bonus!

And with broadened horizons, writing silly posts like the ones in this thread won't seem like such a great idea.  Or if you do, you might actually have a point behind them like I was really hoping you did.  But I guess you wrote them to just be a dick.  And that's ok.  But don't expect to get taken seriously...  and don't be surprised if people eventually ignore you all together.

You could also start with capitalizing your first and last names.  You should take pride in your name and not be ashamed of it.  Capitalize that F!  Capitalize that W!  Show the world that Frank White is a somebody.  Not just some hack who found a website where he can pour out the bile from his unsatisfactory life.

And probably the most important piece of advice as you try to become more like me.  Take pride in what you do.  You can call me silly names, but I'm ok with it, because I'm not ashamed of the work I do with the FD, or any of the other things I do around town to make Berwyn a better place.  I don't do these things to garner the approval of a frank white, or a hvychvy, or anyone else who likes to shit on those of us who do things.  I'm proud of what I do...  and you're going to have to let go of the notion that calling someone a name will make them stop what they are doing.  And you should take that mentality to heart yourself.

If you want to be a troll, be a troll...  be proud of it.  Don't change your ways simply because I said you were a troll.  You should never give up so easily...  I never would.  --  But if you truly have seen the error of your ways, I do hope you will strive to be more like me.  You could do alot worse.

it's just that easy rob.  You don't even have to run for anything.  You could just state "for better government in Illinois", and start collecting.  It's a beautiful thing.

Yeah, and then you can do what Frank Marzullo is doing with the Committee for a Better Berwyn and have all your meetings every weekend in Lake Geneva and charge in the gas against the money you've collected in campaign contributions... <LOL>

Keep licking those boots Scoon and writing lenghty posts that are full of drivel and nonsense. Who filled you with this sense of self importance? It is great to know that someone so intelligent as you is out there doing such great things for Berwyn! Licking boots, sucking up and being a sycophant,...great qualities. I'm sure that I am not alone in thinking we are lucky to have such a wonderful example of citizenry here in Berwyn. Keep up the good work.

First of all, I started the committe when I was running for an elected office in Will County.  I lost the race and chose not to dissolve the committee.  Not sure if I might run again in the future.  Have I contributed to the DCOB?  Yes I have.  I also gave to the IVB  last year for the Mardi Gras.  I have also given to Republican candidates in the past, both in Berwyn and throughout the area.

Most of the contributions my family members and myself have given to the DCOB and Lovero have all been returned because, Mr. Lovero doesl not want to accept money from me or my family members.  So somebody needs to recheck the D-2's.

I was asked to be the Treasurer of both the DCOB and Bob Lovero's committee by Mr. Lovero.  Now, I do not have to explain my reasons as to why, but I will tell everybody this: Bob Lovero and I have been friends for over 30 years.  I value my friendship with him and could not say no when he asked.  I believe in being loyal to a friend.  He is my friend.

As far as Mr. Korbos saying "the pot calling the kettle black."  I have in the past questioned his donations to certain individuals and wondered why, if he was a" loyal Democrat" would he support others, as was told to me by a friend of mine, who also knows Ted.  The same person who says he is an upstanding and trustworthy individual, of which I have related to Mr. Korbos on a few occasions, when I have sent him messages in private.  I have never met Ted, but I do respect him and his views.  People who do not agree with Ted, have also told me that he is a great person, so I will not say anything bad about him nor question his character.

No promises or favors  have been made to me, nor have I asked for any promises or favors from Bob.  That is not how he operates nor do I .

What I find reprehensible is that so many people on here, always want to try and find the dirt or sully somebodys character or reputation because they do not agree with their views.  Why, I should become an issue in a thread about Local events and Meetings is a mystery to me.

With so many other problems going on in the city, county, state and in the world, why worry about me?    Now, I may not agree with everybody on here all the time, but I do not disagree with everybody on here either.  Believe it or not!

If anybody wants to question my character or the type of individual I am, ask Scoon, OPS, LL Schmidt, who I met during the Citizens Academy,Panther, if he still reads this crap. Panther has known me and my family for a long time.  I consider Scoon and OPS, good friends and they will give it to you straight.  They can tell you that I do not always agree with them, but do listen to their arguments and keep an open mind.

Well, enough of my long winded response, and its time for me to get ready for the DCOB's " I Love Berwyn" party.

Bonster, I definately need to have a few beers now, even though I am a vodka man, and would like to have a few with you real soon.

Some would say that's politicizing the Department.  Bobby would say that's surrounding himself with friends.

It's both.

Same reason you would support others (IVB, Republicans) as a "loyal Dem?"

That's not the issue. As Bonster pointed out, you yourself have admitted to giving to candidates other than Democrats.

I have no problems with people giving contributions to candidates or participating in the political process.  In fact, I encourage it.

What I don't like are people who take a holier-than-thou attitude toward people who make large political contributions and then I later find out that the holier-than-thou hypocrites have made large contributions themselves.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't be throwing stones.

Participation in the politcal realm via contribution in money, voting for or supporting your candidate is the American way.

It is said that more persons need to be involved.  But, when someone announces involvement on the BTF they are chastized.

Damned if you do and damned if you dont.

The nature of online chat, is lies and wild accusations, directed at a percieved situation that may not in fact exist.  Like the news media that is reporting with so called accuracy not truth.

The no votes were 1,2,6 & 7. Some aldermen thought there was too much information to sift through in a short amount of time and therefore felt that they could not vote effectively.
The agendas show the budget was given to Alderman in November and on the COW agenda Nov. 27, Dec.11, Jan 8 and Jan 22and the Feb. 11 agenda lists a discussion of the budget process.   IMO, it seems the budget was distrubuted in a timely manner allowing for discussion and debate.

These are the people we elected and who want to continue to be elected.  This is what we wanted, right?

Here's the problem:  The budget was emailed to the Alderman, and since certain aldermen have problems reading email, they didn't have time.
