Had my main sewer rodded.  The threads where the clean out plug connects (some are damaged) so the clean out plug doesn't tighten well.  Can I use a different type of plug (i.e., test plug) to seal the pipe?  I tried to tighten as much as I could put want to get a better seal.   Any help or information is appreciated.

I had the same problem, the plumber took a wire brush lightly on the threads. Then he smeared a black gasket sealer booth sides of the threads, replacing the cap and lightly tightening, problem was solved. The sealer can be purchased at most automotive stores, has been used on cars for years.Sorry I can't remember the name,I sure Berwynson has the answer.

I did not mention you might need a new cap,as the old ones corrode over the years.
