Title: Flags at Half Staff
Post by: Jeff Janda on October 08, 2010, 02:39:59 PM
The Berwyn Park District has received numerous inquiries as to why the flags are being flown at half staff.  The Illinois Flag Display Act which covers municipalities requires under directive of the Governor of Illinois that all U.S. and State of Illinois flags are to be flown at half staff upon the death of a resident soldier killed by hostile fire, and the line of duty deaths of Illinois police officers and fireman.

The Berwyn Park District receives an email based notice from the State of Illinois when this occurs.

It is sad that there have been a number of official notices lately honoring our fallen heroes.  I have included a copy of the applicable statute for reference.

Respectfully,

Jeff Janda, CPRP
Executive Director

Jeff - if you or someone on your staff can post here the names of the resident soldiers when you receive the notice to fly at half staff, it would be greatly appreciated. It is just one more way to keep these soldiers and their sacrifices front of mind.

It would help us honor them. Thank you - Vicki

Wow - it's nice to know your true feelings about our soldiers.  Whether or not you agree with our government and their mission the soldiers who fight and put their lives on the line each and every day deserve much more than that - especially the dead ones.

Staff Seargent Robert J. Miller of Wheaton just received the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously so I would think that especially now we should be thinking of all the veterans who layed down their life for this country.  My dad, who served in WWII, always kept a picture of him and "the guys" who served with him in the war.  As he got older we asked him why he still hung onto that picture.  Even when he was in his last years and moved here in Berwyn he made sure we put up that picture.  He said there were so many young guys his age (18 and 19) who were killed and they probably never married or had any kids.  He said it was because he wanted to make sure they were not forgotten.  On his deathbed when he suffered greatly, he thought of them and said how lucky he was to have lived such a long life.  He died at 72.

@ Watcher,
20th SFG (ABN), a recently returned Special Forces unit, has a few teams based here in Chicago...why don't you go tell them what you have said here. That's a meeting I'd pay to observe. I have attended multiple military funerals as a family member, veteran and Patriot Guard Rider. And you? You are the lowest form of unpatriotic despicable scum because of what you've written here. Next time you wonder about your right to spew your hate you'd better remember those that fought and died to protect your right to do so. They are our true heroes. You? You rate the title of scumbag...

Air Force Senior Airman Daniel J. Johnson
Died October 05, 2010 serving during Operation Enduring Freedom

23, of Schiller Park, Ill.; assigned to 30th Civil Engineer Squadron, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.; died Oct. 5 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

EOD airman dies in Afghanistan

An explosive ordnance disposal airman died Tuesday after insurgents in Afghanistan attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Senior Airman Daniel J. Johnson was conducting an explosive ordnance operation west of Kandahar when his unit was attacked. Tech. Sgt. Daniel Butler suffered injuries from the blast, according to the Defense Department.

Both men were serving as members of the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. Lt. Ann Blodzinski, a spokeswoman at Vandenberg, declined to comment on Butler's condition.

Johnson, of Schiller Park, Ill., joined the Air Force about a year after graduating from Monona Grove High School in Wisconsin. He was on his second tour in Afghanistan and is the 30th Space Wing's first active-duty airman killed since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began, Blodzinski said.

He had completed less than a month of a planned six-month deployment.

Johnson talked about the dangers of his job in a March interview with California television station KSBY.

"You work on an IED or something like that, and you know there's hostile forces around you, you must be crazy to do what you do," Johnson said. "I never really thought about it. It just seemed like a cool job."

A memorial service at Vandenberg remained in the planning stages Thursday. Col. Richard Boltz, commander of the 30th Space Wing commander, said in a news release that "the loss of one of our own deeply affects us all."

"Team Vandenberg is pulling together closely to be there for the Johnson and Butler families and for each other," he said.

Paul Brost, principal of Monona Grove High School, told the Wisconsin State Journal that Johnson graduated from the school in 2005 after four years as a good student and three-sport athlete.

Brost said Johnson was on the football, swimming and track teams. He also was editor of the school yearbook and worked on the student newspaper.

Friends said Johnson got married in June.

Johnson was the fifth airman to die in the war zones since Sept. 15:

* Senior Airman Mark A. Forester, 29, died Sept. 29 while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan's Uruzgan province. He was assigned to the 21st Special Tactics Squadron at Pope Air Force Base, N.C.

* Senior Airman Michael J. Buras, 23, died Sept. 21 as the result of an improvised explosive device detonation in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 99th Civil Engineer Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

* Senior Airman Daniel R. Sanchez, 23, died Sept. 16 while conducting combat operations in the Afghanistan's Oruzgan province. He was assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

* Senior Airman James A. Hansen, 25, died Sept. 15 of wounds suffered during a controlled detonation at Joint Base Balad, Iraq. He was assigned to the 46th Operations Support Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.

3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment memorializes fallen Marine
1st Marine Division
Story by Cpl. Daniel Blatter

Marines and sailors from 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, in Sangin, paused to honor Lance Cpl. John T. Sparks. Sparks, 23, a machine gunner with Weapons Platoon, India Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines was killed in action, Oct. 8.

"It is my personal and professional honor to be a part of this memorial service and to pay tribute to Lance Cpl. John Sparks' life and his sacrifice," said Lt. Col. Jason Morris, the commanding officer of 3/5. "I give thanks every day that I had the opportunity to serve with and lead a man such as John, a man that gave his last full measure defending his nation against its enemies."

Sparks attended Paul Robeson High School in Chicago, where he played football and wrestled. Upon graduation, Sparks attended Westwood College where he received an associate's degree in criminal justice. Sparks enlisted in the Marine Corps in Feb. 2008.

Sparks was assigned to India Company, 3/5 in Sept. 2008, and was currently on his second deployment.

"He was a physically tough and mentally focused Marine who never quit. He was a mentor, friend and leader within India Company," said Capt. Christopher Esrey, the company commander for India Company. "India Company is shaken by his loss, but we will carry out our mission in his name. Sparks will be greatly missed as a fellow Marine, a friend and a brother. His sacrifice will never be forgotten."

Nearly every Marine in Sangin attended the memorial and paid their respects to their fallen brother.

"My friend is gone and it seems that no matter what I do, the pain in my heart won't go away," said Cpl. Jeffery Holsey, a machine gun team leader and roommate of Sparks. "John had the best qualities a person could ask for. He was always laughing and always smiling. He never let the troubles of the world get him down."

Holsey laughed and cried as he remembered and talked of the old days with Sparks.

"Sparks loved machine guns," said Holsey. "He would always say that 'Everyone wants to be a machine gunner until it is time to be a machine gunner, because the hurt we carried separated the men from the boys.'"

The short, quiet ceremony was marked by Bible verses and prayers honoring Sparks. Final Roll was called three times for Lance Cpl. John T. Sparks only to be answered by silence. Taps followed in a final farewell.

"I would like to thank Mrs. Lenora Sparks for raising and nurturing such an extraordinary man, brother, and son," said Esrey. "Without his family at home, his second family, here in India Company, 3/5, would have never been blessed with his presence."

As the ceremony came to an end, the Marines remembered Sparks for who he was.

"He always carried his weight and when others couldn't, John would pick up their slack," said Holsey. "He was a selfless person. He always gave everything and never asked for anything in return.

"I love you and will miss you John Sparks."

Sparks awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medal.

Sparks leaves behind his mother, Lenora.

Someone should tell City Hall that they have to lower the city and state flag as well. The U.S. flag along 26th Street is lowered but the others are still at the top. Can't fly any flag higher than the U.S. flag.

Family mourns Plainfield man killed in Afghanistan
By Tony Graf
tgraf@stmedianetwork.com
Last Modified: Nov 4, 2010 05:22PM

PLAINFIELD — Serving in Afghanistan, Army Pfc. Andrew N. Meari kept a photograph of his grandfather, a picture taken while the elder was serving with the Army in the Korean War.

Meari carried the picture in his wallet. He bore a striking resemblance to the young private of 50-plus years ago.

"That was something he was proud to carry," Meari's uncle said Wednesday.

Meari, 21, of Plainfield, was killed Monday in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense announced.

Meari is the son of Denise Meehan, of Plainfield, and Mahmoud Meari, of Grafton, Wis. Meari attended Plainfield South High School and Drauden Point Middle School, said his uncle, Todd Williams, of Chicago, a family spokesman.

Meari is remembered as an outgoing young man, a bright student, and a hero.

Meari's awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Combat Infantry Badge.

Soldier's youth

Meari was born Sept. 14, 1989, in Chicago. His mother moved to Plainfield when she remarried, Williams said.

As a small boy, Meari loved to play with the Tonka trucks that Williams bought for him.

"That was the thing I always did for him. I would always give him trucks for his birthday or Christmas. He had a whole fleet of those," Williams said.

"He was outgoing, friendly, a big jokester," Williams said of Meari. "He loved to joke around, loved to tease. That's big in our family. He was very protective of his cousins and his family."

Meari was a bright student who often was ahead of the challenges that his school could provide for him, Williams said.

"He had a lot of potential," Williams said. "He found his niche in the military. He loved being a soldier, and he loved doing what he was doing."

Meari attended Plainfield South, but graduated high school in Wisconsin.

He joined the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell, Ky., in February 2009, according to the fort's website.

Duty in Afghanistan

Meari was deployed to Afghanistan with the Army in May, Williams said.

During his leave in August, he was able to return home to see his mother in Plainfield, his uncle in Chicago and other relatives.

"That was the last time we saw him," Williams said. "It was great to see him. Thank God we got to see him when we did."

At the time of his death, Meari was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), out of Fort Campbell.

On Monday, Meari's unit was attacked with a vehicle-borne explosive device in the Zhari district, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

"He died a hero," Williams said. "He is going to be missed — he and the other soldier who was killed. They were good friends. They had a pretty tight unit."

Also killed in the attack was Spc. Jonathan Curtis, 24, of Belmont, Mass.

Meari is survived by his father and mother; two brothers, Ethan and Andrew; and a sister, Jenna.

Williams said of Meari: "He did something that a lot of people can't do or won't do. His commanding officer spoke glowingly of Andrew and Jonathan. He was well-loved by his family as well as the soldiers he worked with. He died defending his country. That's the ultimate sacrifice. God bless him."

Tears, salutes as hundreds turn out for return of soldier's body

The purpose of Veterans Day was perhaps never more apparent to the place U.S. Army Cpl. Chad Young called home than when his body arrived at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport Thursday morning.

Hundreds of people lined the roughly 14-mile route between the airport and a Chatham funeral home to honor the 25-year-old soldier's service and to support his family.

Young, who lived in Rochester and attended Ball-Chatham schools, was killed by an improvised explosive device while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan, with the Army's 863rd Engineer Battalion. It was his second deployment to Afghanistan.

His body arrived via charter jet about 9 a.m. to an emotional scene at the 183rd Fighter Wing's facilities at the airport.

More than 30 relatives, some holding flags, others clutching tissues, gathered on the tarmac with members of the military, local firefighters and more than 100 Illinois Patriot Guard Riders standing by.

Young's parents, Brett and Jerry Young, and siblings Katie Robbins and Steven Baptist embraced before Young's flag-draped coffin was unloaded from the jet and carried by an Illinois Army National Guard Honor Guard into the back of a white hearse.

The tarmac was almost silent, except for relatives' sobs and the drone of airport vehicles in the distance.

A motorcade made up of dozens of law-enforcement vehicles with sirens left the airport grounds about 9:20 a.m. and onto J. David Jones Parkway for the journey to Staab Polk Memorial Home on Illinois 4 on the south side of Chatham.

Many people held flags along the side of the road as the procession passed. Others stood outside their vehicles, saluting or holding their hands over their hearts.

Among them was Amanda Trigg of Williamsville, a staff sergeant in the Illinois Army National Guard, who stood near the airport entrance with her four children, ranging in age from 2 to 11.

She didn't know Young, but said she was moved by his homecoming.

"I just felt, with it being Veterans Day, that my kids need to understand the price our service members have to pay," Trigg said while wiping away tears. "I told them that there was a veteran coming home who was killed in the line of duty, and he gave his life to make sure that we were all safe."

Trigg said she has several friends who have been overseas, are preparing to go or are in combat zones now, and Young's death illustrates the dangers they face.

"It just reminds you everyday that there's always that chance," she said.

Bob and Loni Bastas were farther south alongside Veterans Parkway.

"We didn't know him, but we came out to share our support, and we just wanted the family know that they're in our prayers," Loni Bastas said.

Keeley Emerson of Divernon and her son Stephen were among those at Chatham Community Park when the procession passed.

"(Stephen's) dad's a veteran," Emerson said. "I think about his sacrifice and what he did."

Young also was honored with a salute during the Chatham Veterans Day ceremony on the village square.

Our Towns-Chatham reporters Kevin Tremain and Jennifer Pointer contributed to this report. Amanda Reavy can be reached at 788-1525.

Services

U.S. Army Cpl. Chad Young's visitation and funeral service will take place at Staab Polk Memorial Home, 8855 Illinois 4 on the south side of Chatham.

Visitation is scheduled for 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. Monday.

The funeral procession will start about noon and will travel north on Illinois 4, east on Jefferson Street and then continue east on Clear Lake Avenue to Camp Butler National Cemetery near Riverton, where Young will be buried withmilitary honors.

Funeral home director Paula Staab Polk said plans are in the works to broadcast Young's funeral to his fellow servicemen and women in Afghanistan.

Streets Lined As Jordan Emrick's Body Is Returned to Hoyleton; Preparations Begin to Counter Westboro Baptist Church Protest at Funeral 11/12/10 @ 12:58:43 pm

The Washington County route that brought 26-year-old Marine Staff Sergeant Jordan Emrick home to rest was filled with people saluting or waiving American flags as the procession passed.  American flags lined Illinois Route 177 headed into Hoyleton where the procession ended at the Styninger Funeral Home.  Emrick died last Friday by a roadside bomb.

The procession that started at MidAmerican Airport included a large number of emergency vehicles, friends, family, and several hundred members of the Freedom Riders.  Emrick was a six year veteran of the Marines, joining shortly after graduating from Nashville High School.  Visitation will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton after four Friday, with funeral services at the church at eleven Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, word that the controversial Westboro Baptist Church would have protestors at the funeral has stirred up more emotions.  230 Patriot Guard riders plan to be in place to drown out the protestors.  Norrenberns Truck Service also plans to park two Marine decal trailers in an effort to prevent the family of the fallen Marine from seeing or hearing the protestors.

One of those assisting in the effort, Ashley Community Fire Protection District Captain Joshua Hughey, notes while freedom of speech is protected by the Constitution and defended by the soldiers of the military, a funeral is an inappropriate place to voice opinions.   Hughey feels family and friends of the deceased should be afforded the right to a private ceremony, and should be allowed to pay their respects without the distraction of others.

The Westboro Baptist Church on its website 'God Hates Fags' says it will picket the funeral from 10:15 to eleven Saturday morning to remind the nation that God himself is striking down the young men of this nation in their prime due to all the proud, unrepentant sinning of Doomed America.

Fallen Marine remembered as father and husband
by Deborah Donovan

After losing "an amazing father and amazing husband more than I could ever ask for," Katie Stack says her year-old daughter, Mikayla, is her whole life.

The 19-year-old will bury her husband, Lance Cpl. James Stack, 20, Saturday. The Marine was shot and killed last week after being deployed in Afghanistan only a month.

Katie, who like her husband is from Arlington Heights, talked Tuesday in her mother's north Arlington Heights townhouse about the short years she had with James Stack.

They met when the 16-year-old Katie transferred as a junior from Prospect High School to Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights. James' parents taught him at home, but he was on the academy's track team, where both he and Katie were high jumpers.

James wrote Katie notes and gave her yellow roses. "I love the color yellow and I don't like red," she said.

When Mikayla came along, James' love for his daughter was obvious, said Katie.

"I would be cleaning or something and see them playing. I could see how much he loved her, and she absolutely adored him."

And Katie felt that love from James, too.

"He always took care of me. I had some medical problems. He was there by my side the entire time. He never left my side. It was amazing."

While the couple was very active running, walking or swimming together and even wrestling with each other, they did have favorite movies and video games.

A character in the Transformer movies inspired the name of their daughter, Mikayla.

And the video games were "Call of Duty," military shooting games.

"We would sit and down and play it," she said. "That was our thing. I'm one of the very few women who would play that game." The young wife insists she held her own with the Marine.

"We are both very competitive," she said.

When James left for Afghanistan, he didn't want to talk about the worst happening, saying she shouldn't worry, and he would come home.

"I made him talk about it," said Katie. "I sat him down and said 'It's war. Anything can happen, you know.' We told each other that we loved each other. No matter what happens we are never going to be apart. He's always going to be with me."

And that's how she gets through these horrible days: "I talk to him, tell him I love him, and I pray. Mikayla keeps me going. Just looking at her I know he lives within her. She's my world now. She's what I live for."

Another thing that helps is the Marine family.

While the men James fought with are still in Afghanistan, 10 Marine friends will be pallbearers. A special friend, Lance Cpl. Ryan Madura of Camp Pendleton in California, will escort the body. And 10 others, mostly wives and sweethearts of Marines, will come to be with Katie.

Katie and James are among the youngest couples in their circle, yet she is the first to lose her spouse.

"Those boys over there really need prayers and whatever else they can get," Stack says. "We're all getting through it together as a family. I really want people to know that he's a Christian and saved, and I can't wait to reunite with him in Heaven."

James called her on a satellite phone two nights before he was killed, and Katie has received at least 20 letters and knows more are on the way. She got three the day she was told James had died.

His message was, "basically that he loves us and can't wait to come home to us."

"It helps that he's a hero. He's mine and Mikayla's hero forever."

James Stack was a rifleman in India Company 3/5 Marines in the 1st division. They were serving in Sangin in Helmand province, considered one of the most violent places in Afghanistan, according to The Associated Press.

"He liked being a Marine, but did not like how much time he was away from his family," she said.

"He liked being a hero to me and my daughter. I was very proud of him. He liked that he was actually doing something in the world for America."

James Stack's mother, Linda, said she and her husband, Robert, share memories when they can't sleep at night.

"Katie and Mikayla are such a welcome addition to this tight family," said Linda. Katie considers James' 16-year-old sister, Megan, her own sister.

His mother said James was the kind of young boy who would jump up from his Happy Meal at McDonald's to open the door for an elderly couple.

He wasn't the most dedicated student, she said, recalling how he'd try to distract Megan from her studies, and spend his studying time texting to Katie.

Linda Stack is grateful for the dignified ceremony when the Marines brought his body home to Dover Air Force Base and said it helped give her closure.

"I was looking up to the heavens with a silly smirk on my face," she said, knowing that the box contained only her son's body.

"I was looking up to the heavens where my Savior and my son are."

The elder Stacks pledge their love and support to Katie and Mikayla.

"I'm so proud of you," Linda said to Katie. "Thank you. Thank you for loving my son. He needed to know that people outside our little niche loved him as much as we did."

It gets worse...

Cops: Parolee made sure cop, ex-officer were dead
http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/11/no-bail-for-parolee-in-deaths-of-cop-ex-cha-officer.html

After he gunned down a Chicago police officer and a former public housing officer, Timothy Herring Jr. noticed one of them still moving, authorities say.

So the 19-year-old parolee went back to them as they lay in a Southeast Side alley and shot each in the head a second time, prosecutors disclosed today in court.

Police said Herring shot evidence technician Michael Flisk and former Chicago Housing Authority officer Stephen Peters because he did not want to be caught for burglarizing Peters' car and sent back to prison.
Herring was paroled earlier this year after serving half of a six-year prison sentence for the 2007 armed robbery of a liquor store.

Herring lives across the alley from a garage in the 8100 block of South Burnham Avenue where Peters kept his customized red Mustang GT.

Several months ago, Herring told a friend he wanted to "hit the victim for his sounds," meaning he wanted to steal the car's stereo equipment, prosecutors say.

Last Friday, Herring broke into the garage, stole the equipment and stashed it in two garbage cans near the garage, according to prosecutors.

Peters' mother said her son discovered the burglary and reported it to police, then he found the stereo parts in the trash cans.

Suspecting the burglar would return, Peters got a gun from his mother's house and went to the garage, his mother Laura Peters said. While in the alley, Flisk arrived to process the scene.

While the two talked, Herring approached and told Peters he knew who had stolen the parts, according to prosecutors. Peters replied it didn't matter because Flisk was able to recover fingerprints and they would lead to the burglar, prosecutors said.

Herring then walked away and "pulled out a gun and shot each victim in the head," prosecutors said.

Herring started carrying off the trash cans but "noticed one of the victims was still moving. [Herring] then went up to the victims and shot each one a second time in the head," prosecutors contend.

One of the prints recovered from inside one of the garbage cans was linked to Herring, prosecutors said. And four shell casings recovered from the scene were traced to a gun linked to Herring, they said.

Herring also admitted the shootings to other people, telling them he did not want to go back to prison, prosecutors said. Herring was on parole and on home-electronic monitoring.   ???

Appearing in court today, Herring's hair was disheveled and unevenly cut, apparently from his alleged attempts to change his appearance after the shooting by hastily cutting off his braids.

He declined to say anything in court when given an opportunity by Judge Ramon Ocasio III, mumbling, "No, your honor." He was ordered held without bail.

Herring was brought into court under heavy security from Cook County sheriff's deputies. A half dozen Chicago police officers filled the chairs in the courtroom.

None of Herring's relatives attended the hearing.

Earlier today, Mayor Richard Daley said Herring should not have been paroled from prison. The mayor said people convicted of gun crimes should be ineligible for parole.

"Oh, I think so, definitely," Daley said at a news conference to discuss the city's winter weather preparedness. "Especially armed robbery with a gun, where a person is carrying a gun."

Daley has long pushed for tougher laws and sentencing for gun crimes.

"If they commit a crime with a gun, you'd better put some flags on that individual," the mayor said.

Daley said he hopes prosecutors pursue the death penalty if Herring is convicted.

Governor Quinn Proclaims Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day; Orders Flags to Be Flown at Half-Staff
Administration Hosts Remembrance Ceremony in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – December 7, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed today as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in honor and memory of the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In commemoration of the observance, Governor Quinn ordered United States and Illinois flags be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset today.

"December 7 is a day we come together as a nation to honor the bravery and service of the men and women who gave their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor," said Governor Quinn. "It is also a day to give thanks to the millions of Americans who fought in World War II and those who serve our country today."

The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) hosted a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony at the Disabled American Veterans Hall - Chapter #15, 25 Club Area (Lake Springfield), in Springfield. The ceremony honored all Pearl Harbor survivors and paid tribute to the more than 2,400 Americans, including 50 servicemembers from Illinois, who lost their lives during the attack on the base. Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Assistant Director Sergio Estrada led the tribute, which included a special wreath-laying ceremony by Illinois Pearl Harbor survivors and their families.

"As a result of the unexpected and tragic event that occurred on December 7, 1941, our nation was triggered to war and many brave Americans lost their lives," said IDVA Director Dan Grant. "By paying tribute to them today, we remember that they did not die in vain, and our nation is stronger for their sacrifice."

Assistant Director Estrada was joined by John Carrigan, board president of the World War II Illinois Veterans Memorial; Lynn Shindel, State Chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors; and guest speaker, Commander Shawn P. Murphy of the United States Transportation Command.

Full story: http://www2.tbo.com/content/2011/mar/15/last-american-veteran-of-world-war-i-buried/

The Associated Press
Published: March 15, 2011

ARLINGTON, Va. — Frank Buckles was buried today with the pomp and ceremony befitting the man who outlived 4.7 million other Americans who served in World War I.

His flag-draped casket was carried to his gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery on a caisson led by seven horses. A seven-man firing party fired three rifle volleys and a bugler played tapsas hundreds of onlookers saluted or held their hands to their hearts.

At the end of the graveside service, soldiers from the Army's vaunted "Old Guard" folded the flag as an Army band played "America the Beautiful." Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli presented it to Buckles' daughter, Susannah Flanagan.

"To our comrade in arms, Frank Woodruff Buckles, our nation bestows military honors," said Lt. Col. Keith N. Croom, an Army chaplain. "In life, he honored the flag. Now, the flag honors him."

Buckles lied about his age to enlist at 16. He died last month at his Charles Town, W.Va., home, at age 110.

Before the burial, his body lay in honor inside Arlington's Memorial Amphitheater Chapel, guarded by an Old Guard soldier in full dress uniform. Hundreds of visitors filed by silently to pay their respects and snap pictures.

Around 3 p.m., after the public viewing was over, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden arrived by motorcade to pay their respects. They spent about 10 minutes inside the chapel and offered their condolences to Flanagan.

Flanagan had wanted her father to lie in repose in the U.S. Capitol, but Congress failed to approve that plan as politicians clashed over how best to honor Buckles and other WWI veterans. The last person to lie in the Capitol rotunda was President Gerald Ford.

Flanagan and other invited guests at the burial did not speak to reporters.

Buckles' grave is on the side of a hill ringed by cedar trees with views of the Washington Monument, Capitol dome and Jefferson Memorial to the north. At the crest of the hill, 50 yards away, sits the grave of Gen. John Pershing, under whose command Buckles served, along with a plaque commemorating the 116,516 Americans who died in World War I.

A few hundred people attended the burial, including dozens of veterans from the Patriot Guard Riders and Rolling Thunder who rode through the cemetery on rumbling motorcycles. Six Native American veterans, in uniform and full headdresses, stood at attention and held flags at the gravesite.

Dignitaries in attendance included Army Secretary John McHugh, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki and Sens. John J. Rockefeller and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Buckles had devoted the last years of his life to campaigning for greater recognition for his former comrades, prodding politicians to support a national memorial in Washington.

Only two known WWI veterans remain worldwide: 110-year-old survivors Florence Green in Britain and Claude Choules in Australia.

Born in Missouri in 1901 and raised in Oklahoma, Buckles visited a string of military recruiters and was repeatedly rejected before convincing an Army captain he was 18. He served as an ambulance driver in England and France, and after Armistice Day, he helped return prisoners of war back to Germany. He returned to the United States in 1920 as a corporal.

During World War II, he was working as a civilian for a shipping company in the Philippines when he was captured as a prisoner of war. He spent more than three years in Japanese prison camps in Santo Tomas and Los Banos.

Among those who filed by Buckles' casket was Dale E. Smith, 88, a retired fighter pilot who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

"I've been through three wars," Smith said. "They were easy compared to what he went through."

Police officer dies after falling ill while on duty 1:43 p.m. CDT, May 20, 2011

A 21-year veteran Chicago Police narcotics officer died this morning, a day after he was taken to a hospital complaining of chest pains while on duty, officials said.

The officer, Paul Nauden, 46, of the Scottsdale neighborhood on the Southwest Side, was pronounced dead at 6:15 a.m. at the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Nauden was a 21-year Chicago police veteran, according to city records.

The officer was on patrol Thursday afternoon when he began feeling ill and was taken to the hospital, said police spokesman Officer John Mirabelli. The narcotics officer was assigned to the police's Homan Square facility, said Mirabelli, who wouldn't confirm the officer's name.

Later that evening, at a vigil for fallen officer Thomas Wortham IV, Chicago Police chaplain the Rev. Daniel Brandt led a prayer for Nauden.

Following his death, dozens of police officers from various districts gathered near the Hyde Park hospital in a show of unity and escorted the ambulance carrying his body to the medical examiner's office.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Salutes, tributes begin as fallen soldier returns home

http://beaconnews.suntimes.com/news/10084139-418/salutes-tributes-begin-as-fallen-soldier-returns-home.html (http://beaconnews.suntimes.com/news/10084139-418/salutes-tributes-begin-as-fallen-soldier-returns-home.html)

Red and blue lights lit up the night sky on Wednesday as the procession for fallen soldier Christopher Patterson passed through Aurora.

In a black hearse, the body of 20-year-old Patterson was brought home, and there were dozens of residents waiting to honor his arrival.

On Route 31, at the entrance of the Mooseheart campus, 17-year-old NJROTC member Yolanda Linneman stood at attention as she watched the stream of cars, motorcycles and fire engines pass the school on the way to Moss Family Funeral home.

The cold wind stung her face, but the discomfort was a small price to pay to honor the sacrifice of the young soldier.

"I think that this gives us a chance to reflect and to see what the soldiers go through," she said. "The least we can do is come show our respect."

Mooseheart Executive Director Scott Hart said the students of the community's NJROTC program wanted to honor Patterson when they found out about the procession.

"It's such a small thing, but our kids here, many of them have been through a lot and they really feel when other people are hurting," said Hart. "They believe in honoring those who have given the supreme sacrifice."

Patterson, of North Aurora, died Jan. 6 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while he was serving as a specialist for the Indiana National Guard in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Patterson was studying at Valparaiso University to become a music teacher when his unit was called up for duty in Afghanistan. Though he was not required to deploy because of school, he chose to take a leave of absence from his studies to ship out with his unit in November.

It was a decision of honor, and one that Mooseheart student Andrew Remy plans on making himself.

"I've always wanted to join the military. Ever since I was a kid," the JNROTC member said. He said that Patterson's death, while tragic, would not deter him from serving his country.

"I've made up my mind (to join) already. Nothing is going to change that," he said.

Patterson's family has a similar mindset.

Christopher's younger brother, Carl Patterson, a 2010 West Aurora graduate, recently reported for training in the Marines. His father, Robert Patterson, is retired from the Navy, and his mother, Mary Patterson, is a Navy reservist, yeoman second class.

Patterson died alongside three other members of the 713th Engineer Company: Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Metzger, 32; Spc. Brian J. Leonhardt, 21, and Spc. Robert J. Tauteris Jr., 44, all of Indiana.

Patterson is being remembered throughout the communities he touched. Valparaiso University has planned a memorial service for Patterson and his fellow guardsmen, and Patterson's name will be added to North Aurora's Veterans Memorial.

Another procession will be held Friday morning as Patterson's remains are taken from Moss Funeral Home to Immanuel Lutheran Church, where visitation will be held.

The procession will leave the funeral home at 10 a.m., travel south down Randall Road, turn east onto Plum Street, turn south on Commonwealth Drive and pull through the high school's main driveway along Galena Boulevard.

West Aurora High School and Jefferson Middle School students and staff will gather outside at 10:30 a.m. as the procession drives past the schools. The route was designed to pass by the high school's auditorium because Patterson's many performances there. He graduated from West in 2009.

The Patriot Guard Riders will accompany the procession, and the North Aurora Fire Department will hang an American flag from ladder trucks at the high school.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 950 Hart Road, Batavia.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Immanuel Lutheran, and will be a celebration of song. The Patterson family encourages everyone attending to wear red to honor the color of Christopher's hair.

About the Peace Officers Memorial Day (part of National Police Week):

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year.
