Title: Tomato Crop 2011
Post by: buzz on August 17, 2011, 11:43:45 PM
I've been getting cherry tomatoes for 10 days now and they're ok.  I don't usually plant them.
My heirlooms are disappointing me; really low fruit production this year.  They're just starting to ripen now.  Last year I had 3 times the number on the vines.
What about yours ?

I don't have a garden, but my sister who lives in Oak Park does, and her cherry tomatoes are some of the sweetest I've ever tasted...and they just keep coming. Sorry Buzz. She has some kind of other tomatoes too, don't know what kind, but good and plentiful. Don't know her secret.

We have been picking our sungolds for 3 weeks.  The other plants (Brandywine and Big Boy) have had good production but the fruit is smaller than past years.

My husband was talking about the tomato plants he has growing at his job.  They aren't doing that good fruit wise as well.  The plant themselves are growing like crazy, but it's taking a while for the fruit to grow & ripen.

I can't remember what kind of tomatos he planted there this year, I will have to ask him.

Our little cherry tomato plant we picked up at Home Depot has grown to "Feed me, Seymour" proportions. Thought I would never state this, but we almost have too many tomatoes this year.

Could the low production be because it's been too wet for maters???

Not to change the subject, but is anyone having trouble with pepper plants? Mine seem to have been loosing their leaves until recently, and maybe after the recent rain are showing signs of new growth. Anyone?

EC, we planted a Cherry Bomb pepper plant (is that the type of peppers you're talking about).  It's grown like crazy, but in the past 2-3 weeks now has begun to produce fruit.  The leaves have had some ups & downs with losing them or looking like they are drooping.

I planted red and green peppers this year and they really don't seem to be doing good at all.

I hate to say this, but I've been getting green peppers from my sister too...and she's just right across the border in Oak Park.

My tomatoes did not come in AT ALL. Nothing. Nada. Plants are full size--- got flowers... then nothing. WTH?

Cukes and Zukes are doing well but nowhere NEAR as high a yield as previous years.

Raspberries didn't do well with the first crop and I don't have high hopes for the 2nd.

Weird year

Our grape tomatoes and heirloom Blondekopf cherry sized tomatoes are AWESOME. The big ones, not so much. We have heirloom Cherokee purples that have produced four tomatoes so far. They're good, but we're hoping to get more. The Health Kick ones (extra lycopene) suck. The Salsariffic ones aren't doing too well. They're small.
Peppers? Too thin-walled. The ones this year are just there, not growing larger, but not dropping off when you gently pull on them.
Herbs? They're okay. But the cilantro bolted before we could even harvest any.  This has been a wacky weather year, for sure.

I don't think the tropical weather in July did the plants any favors.

I'm seriously considering growing a couple varieties next year that are more suited for a southern climate.

Yeah it does seem to have been a weird year for plants.  They all seem to have the same theme, growing like crazy, but not producing the fruit they should.

We were thinking it was because of the timing of all the rain/cooler weather until July hit & we had that stretch of very hot days.  Could be wrong though, who knows...

My tomato plants and peppers have been...well, weird. Good growth, few flowers and fruit.

A double hit of Miracle Grow helped the flower situation....

I tore all but 1 plant out today.  If the squirrels will allow me, I might get 4 more tomatoes this year.  Big f'in deal.
I want to forget this year's tomato crop.

I have maybe about 5 tomatoes right now. One is Red and the other ones are starting to get there. Hopefully I will get some more, because I planted 4 of the big boy ones. My cucumber's crop has been excellent. Ive had about 10 cucumbers already and still have more coming in. I have a huge zucchnni plant and already have two huge zucchnnis out of that. As for my green peppers there getting there hopefully I will have some in, I would say two weeks or so. This is my first year planting too and so far a successful one!
