Does anyone know what occupied the building where Tonini's is? We have had our share of I guess you would say ghostly encounters & I am interested to know who or what might be behind it. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know anything about your building, but am a believer!!
I have had my own experiences with the "lost souls", and only know that if you
have never had the experience you wouldn't believe it can and does happen.
Well there has just been some weird things going on that I didn't believe till it happened to Dave & I. Our baker plays loud music because he swears that someone calls him name from the front of the store. The deli girls have all had experiences. My son has waved bye-bye to an empty kitchen that had all the lights off etc. We have the whole store wired with cameras & when you go to check things out the camera pics are fuzzy....all of them. So we are just curious at this point & if anyone has any info let us know. We have a customer who is a paranormal investigator that wants to check things out there at night. I am thinking I just might do that.
That store was a dance studio for a long time. Then was vacant and used as a temporary space for events, then a costum store. The space with the day care was a Salerno's restaurant operated by the someone in the Salerno family that had the place on 16th Street then on Grove, I want to say they were cousins. After the restaurant closed, it was some sort of Christian self help store or counseling center, not really sure as they were pretty nondescript if you know what I mean. Let us know what goes on!!
Ironically I worked at that Salerno's in high school 20 or so years ago. Does anyone know what it was before that. Maybe as far back as when the depot was uptown.

TLCNurse - a suggestion: pesto mayo, or some other flavored mayo. Small batch. Takes no time to make. Small container in the fridge. No big whoop. Just another option for the peeps. A very small detail that makes your joint stand out, but really doesn't change your routine any.
Some Real Mayo, (I'm pretty sure nobody has to tell you that cheap sugary fake mayo would not be the way to go. I know one of the girls in the shop agrees with me here.)
A good handful of fresh and dried basil
Garlic
Blender
Done.
Common sense will tell you how it's supposed to taste. It's just mayo and basil and garlic.
I'm not saying that you NEED to have it or anything, just a suggestion. I'm also no big food / deli icon, just offering a suggestion. Maybe it sounds good to you, maybe not.

Thanks for the suggestion SeeBee. I will definitely try the pesto mayo. The Mayo at the store is Hellman's or Heinz. We have both. The Heinz are in the packets to go. We use Hellman's in all our deli salads we make & put it on the subs when requested. So if you want it we have it.

Hello Berwynite! Do you have the specific entrees you would like to see at the store? If so I would really like to hear them. Let me know & I can see what I can do. Angie & myself can pretty much make anything you can think of. We try to have at least 6-8 entrees every day. We usually have the staples such as Lasagna, Eggplant Parmigiana, Chicken Parmigiana, Spinach & Artichoke Stuffed Chicken, Mannicotti & Sausage & Peppers. I am always up for a challenge or ideas on new things to make so let me know.

LOL....NEVER! I work full time as a RN in Home Health & Hospice, I run the store & with the kids who has time for sleep. My Grandpa always told me that hard work pays off especially when you love what you do. So it really is a labor of love!

It was a beautiful day last Friday, so I stopped by for a pepper & egg. I really wanted to sit outdoors and read the paper and eat. When I saw you didn't have tables out, I drove down to Brando's, but they don't have outdoor seating either. Will you be having tables when the weather stays nice? (If it ever does)

We will be having outdoor seating as soon as our fresco license is finished. It has been 6 weeks & I can't tell you what a mess it is to get the same exact license for the same exact amount of tables. You have to apply, pay the license fee, make a drawing of the tables & placement, measure the outside of the building, wait for the inspector to validate it, then wait for the license to come in the mail even though it is a big fat ditto of what we did last year. With all the aggravation I can see why other businesses don't even bother. Regardless we hope to have it within 1-2 weeks....before fall LOL
Hopefully by then it will be warm. I'll be back!

Geez, I thought this administration aimed to make it easier to run a business in Berwyn? You know, the whole red tape thing?
We did speak with the Mayor in regards to this redundant process & he did assure us that many of the policies & processes especially this one is being looked at. It really is a waste of time when it is essentially not a "new" license just a renewal. I still don't understand the whole measuring of the front of the building. You would think the city has all that information already. Well Rome was not built in a day & I am sure this process won't be corrected that fast either.

Hello Everyone! Officially tomorrow 5/18/10 Tonini's will be serving our new burgers. We have a cheeseburger & a sausage burger. The sausage burger can be made with sweet, mild, medium or hot. We offer several cheese options such as provolone, cheddar or any of the jacks. American will not work since this is a steamed burger & cheese. The cheeseburger comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, mustard, mayo & pickles. The sausage burger comes with super red sauce if you choose. We make these fresh so the lead time is 15 minutes but it is so worth it & our outdoor seating is available. If you would like please call ahead at (708) 484-4590 & we will have your order ready. The burgers are $4.99 & it comes with a side of our homemade chips. This is a healthier version since we grind our own meat which is lean, the method of cooking is steamed & we use canola oil for our chips. Please let us know your opinion. We have been working hard for the past week to try to perfect these burgers. Also if you want something on them that is not suggested we will do whatever we can to accommodate.

This is an awesome deal on pizza made with top quality ingredients!

I won a delicious hamburger!
I won a hamburger I think, but on BTF not FB.
I finally picked up my cheeseburger ... what a glorious mess! Wow - it was huge & oozed cheese when I took my first bite. The meat was tasty & moist even though it was well done. I prefer mine on the bloodier end of the spectrum and figure there's no way to get it med. rare when you steam it so I didn't ask for it M.R. All the toppings were fresh and it was very filling. The bun pretty much disintegrated about half way through the burger ... maybe if the bread was a hunk of the italian bread or a kaiser roll it would have held up better. Gotta try the sausage version next time.

Scungili you can get them medium rare if you would like. You can also request a burger on Italian Bread or Kaiser Bun. We have both so no problem. The burgers are so juicy that it can be a challenge but with some extra napkins oh so worth it. Dave made patty melt Krunchers over the weekend. He will make them on weekends only when he is there. He thinks he is a grill master LOL. Anyway WOW are they unbelievably good but there is no way to eat one by yourself so you gotta share. Try one of those bad boys medium rare. Dave will be there on Saturday.

I would love to try a burger or one of those crunchers you talk about, but going into your store I see nothing that tells me that you sell. How do I know you make burgers and what are my choices? For Veteran's Day we wanted to do something in Honor of all our soldiers that are on active duty as well as our Veterans. Does anyone know anything about chicken or turkey sausage. I am sure for it to be a fresh product we would need lamb casings since pig casings are to big. If anyone has any idea or knowledge please let me know. I would definitely try it.
By the way Zepoles will be in tomorrow. We will have Custard, Chocolate Custard & Cannoli. The custard zepoles are $1.49 & the cannoli zepoles are $1.99
I certainly don't have any idea, but why would pig casings be "too big?"
(I've been threatening to make chicken / turkey sausage for about 6 months now. I have pig casings in the fridge, ground chicken and turkey in the freezer ready to go. Are my casings too big?)

My theory is meats that tend to be lean remain juicy with smaller casings since they will cook through faster. We feel that our Barese sausage is juicier with the smaller casings since it cooks faster all the way through. Chicken & Turkey are so lean that I feel the inside may be juicy but the outside would be dry. I think if we do this we might as well try it both ways. Also do you think a mixture or dark & white meat or just white meat?
I was thinking of a garlicky sausage with a hint of maybe asiago or parm for a "mild" version & adding a little crushed red pepper for a "medium" version. Maybe with a little splash of vino for moisture.

DEFINITELY NOT just white meat. Mixture or dark only.
As for the cheese, I dunno, I'm just looking for regular old Italian style sausage. One hot, one mild - neither too salty. There are recipes all over the web, I've just been too darn lazy to make them, but we sure have been buying a bunch of chicken sausage and meatballs from Trader Joe's - and liking them.
Well we are going to look into it a little further & will most likely attempt a chicken sausage. I will let you know when that happens. I am sure we will sample it out at the store to get some feedback.
When you get it from Trader's is it raw or does it appear to have been pre-cooked in some way?
The ones we have been getting from Trader Joe's are pre-cooked, but we can go down to Paulina Meat Market and buy raw ones, Whole Foods sells raw chicken snausages too. The Tj ones are more "convenience items." I know you guys are busy and all - just let me know if/when you make em. I'll be there with $ in hand. I'd prefer raw cuz I'd love to toss em on the grill for a while. I totally understand if you are hesitant of selling raw poultry sausage for whatever the reasons may be. Maybe raw / frozen would work?
P.S. just another data point - you can add fat if needed. Also, Moo& Oink sells raw turkey hot links that are insanely juicy and flavorfull- even after a low temp hour and a half smoke. Turkey works just fine. I'd assume you might just have to add some extra fat to the mixture? Again, I have no idea, just trying to throw ideas out. I might be totally wrong.
We are looking into making chicken sausage in the near future so I will post when we have some to sample & sell.
We are also making Focaccia sandwiches. This sandwich is on our 9" Homemade Focaccia Bread & loaded with whatever you would like from Meatballs to Italian Beef to Italian Sausage, Lunch Meats, Chicken Parm etc. After we load it with whatever you desire we will bake it in the oven. It is an awesome sandwich we tried with many customers now requesting it on a regular basis. The price ranges from $6.99 to $10.99 & there is plenty for at least 2 people to share.
tlc, how's the salt content of your meatballs?
Very low amount of salt in our homemade meatballs. If you watched the show you can see exactly how we make out meatballs & the ingredients. We used very little considering we ground about 30lbs of pork with beef & used maybe 2tbsp of salt. We rely more on garlic, black pepper & parsley for flavor. I am very cautious with the use of salt since so many people have cardiac disease that requires them to monitor their diet. We do not use base in our soups either for the same reason.
We will be adding another very special Kruncher to the menu in honor of my cousin Cpt. Kevin Carter who is a MD in the United States Army currently serving in Iraq. He was just deployed a little over a week ago leaving behind his wife & 2 month old baby girl. Before he left we asked him what his favorite sandwich is & it is a Tuna Melt. So the "Carter" Kruncher will be on the menu starting this Friday with $1.00 of every "Carter" Kruncher being donated to the American Legion till he returns home. The "Carter" Kruncher is our Homemade Tuna Salad with your choice of cheese piled high on our Kruncher bread & toasted in the oven. I guess you can say our version of his Tuna Melt. You ever make chicken salad with chicken, onion, celery, salt, pepper, and real mayo, I'm all in. The plain tuna salad wasn't ready when I was there, but I saw the girls making the pasta salad with tuna, and the real mayo was being used. Had to try it.
Glad I did. Chicken salad might take a little more time, or cost more, but, imo, there is no place around here that can make a chicken salad worth my money. Too many fillers, cheap, sugar laden garbage mayo, whatever the case may be. So simple, yet for some reason, it just can't be done. I do know that back in the day, there were a few food service joints that would sell bags of frozen, pre chopped, chicken meat. not sure of the cost on that. I know that making it from scratch is time consuming because of pulling the chicken, but other than that, it's a snap, and should be pretty cheap. I know I'm only one out of the crowd of many that comes in, but I live around the corner, and like the fact that you are there and try to listen, so - another suggestion - REAL CHICKEN SALAD. I understand if it doesn't work out for you. If you ever make it, just post something here, and I'll be there asap.

I spoke with Dave & we will make it from scratch with real chicken breasts using only Hellmann's Mayo. We will have it for you this week. He just has to order the chicken breasts so once we get it I will make a post here. He will also be making chicken sausage this week.

We have all our Easter calzone available inb 4 cheese, Italian sausage, Italian meats & spinach with artichokes. We are selling them by the whole, half or quarter pie. Our 20lbs of boneless skinless chicken breast that was ordered fresh came frozen in a block from our distributor so I sent Angie to the store to get some to make it asap. The deli girls didn't realize what was going on so they misinformed your wife. We will have chicken salad tomorrow for you if you are able to stop back in. We use to carry a high end pre-made deli chicken salad but customers did not like it since they put relish in it so we did stop carrying it. Again please accept our apologies for the mix-up.

No apologies necessary - no big deal. I won't be able to make it in for a few days. Not sure of the costs vs the what the demand will dictate, though I understand that many Americans prefer "all white meat" chicken, I really prefer dark, or at least a mixture. I do completely understand the need to advertise "all white meat," and I'm sure I'll love it. I'm just saying if it costs too much to make a decent profit, I wouldn't be turned off AT ALL if there was some dark meat mixed in. I'd actually like it more. Actually, at grocery stores, I'm seeing boneless skinless chicken thighs priced higher than b/s breasts. Americans are starting to realize that flavor is actually good. Hell, even Jewel and Dominick's are selling skirt steak now for unholy prices now. They used to use that stuff for ground beef until the rest of america figured out it was absolutely delicious. (Glad that the real grocers still sell it for 2.99/lb.)
Anyway, thanks for the update. Like I said, I won't be able to stop in for a few days. Hopefully others will try it, and hopefully enjoy it. I'll get there asap, cuz I'm dying to try it.

It's real food, real ingredients, no mystery. I love it! If the demand isn't there, I understand if you can't keep it.

There will be several tables inside the store as well as outside by next week provided we have enough muscle to make the move. What are those things called in your deli case-salad section. They were a pasta in an alfredo sauce. Big rectangular pillow shaped deals filled with some red pepper stuff perhaps? Like gnocchi on steroids. What are those things called? Do you have them for sale in the freezer case?
Those are roasted red pepper stuffed gnocchi and they are freakin' awesome. I snacked on those cold w/ olives & pepperoni slices yesterday.
Those are red pepper stuffed Gnocchi. They are in the freezer case & we will be placing another order. They are awesome with our alfredo sauce. They have several other stuffed Gnocchis available but this is a favorite. Glad you enjoyed them. We keep coming up with new products all the time. We hope to have chicken sausage soon. We finally found a distributor for chicken thighs & have to sign a contract. Once that is complete we will begin the experimental process. SeeBee will have to be a guinea pig LOL.
Just an FYI the indoor seating is delayed due to the lack of muscle yesterday but we hope to have it by the weekend.

The chicken salad is being made right now. It is selling like crazy so we are increasing how much we make at a time. I am so glad so many people are enjoying items made with fresh ingredients so we intend on keeping it on the menu. Thanks so much for the cupcake compliment. I intend to make them as often as I can.

Sampled the snausage in store after I bought a few links of each. It's good. Darn good. "Regular" could be a little more aggressively spiced (note: spiced, not salted - salt level was fine, imo.) Perhaps the "spicy" style will scratch that itch. Thanks, Tlcnurse. Really good stuff, imo.
P.s. Chatted up Patricia for a second. I asked her if she knew who made the chicken salad for yesterday's batch. She asked me why I was asking. It's because it was absolutely delicious, and different than all of the other times I've had it. She asked why it was different, and I told her it was less salty. She said she made it. Perfection. The chicken was far more tender too.

Thanks...we thought it came out pretty darn good as well considering it was the first time. We agreed it needs a little for spices & will increase the ratio next batch. Let me know what you think about the spicy one. I noticed you start eating it & them it hits you. We used little piggy casings & the regular pig casings to see if it changed anything. I think the regular casings worked out just fine. Tomorrow we may try to make a chicken sausage pizza...alfredo sauce base, chicken sausage, bacon or pancetta, sun dried tomatoes, baby spinach, mozzarella, a little parmesan & fresh basil. I hope to have it ready by around 1pm tomorrow. If this takes off we will continue the chicken sausage & may expand into a homemade bratwurst. Oh & by the way I heard something about chicken meatballs LOL.

Hello SeeBee! Ironically we didn't add any salt to any of the batches only parmesan cheese which is salty enough. We did increase all the other spices including the crushed red pepper. I will let Dave know. We chose Parmesan rather than Romano which is even saltier. He might go with something else such as asiago next time. Thanks for the input we appreciate it! We are always trying to make everything we do better!

We can make whole wheat dough & bread. We did for a while but there was not too much interest. I will be glad to order some wheat flour & make a post when we make the dough. It will be made fresh along with wheat bread, wheat pizza crusts & wheat frazzels. It can be frozen & the price would be between $1.99-$2.49 a (1) Lb bag depending on the cost of wheat flour. Have you stopped making the chicken sausage? If not, can you post when batches are made? Not sure if it was a hassle or not, if so, I understand. I'd also be happy to buy it frozen if you made it and wanted to keep it in the freezer if it doesn't sell out right away. A vaccuum sealer might be of interest in that regard. Again, just suggestions, I don't know the ins-and outs of it all. I understand if it just doesn't make sense for you to do stuff.

Oh yes they are! I know because I have to control myself and not go get one every day! I didn't know what to expect when I first tried one but damn, I can't stand grilled or fried burgers anymore!
We can have the burgers everyday. We just request that our customers pre-order them since we grind the meat fresh that day & make the burgers to order. I absolutely hate when food sits on a steam table all day or in a heat box. We do not do business that way & will never as long as I have a say so. This is definitely not fast food but fresh food. Yes we will have it on Saturday in the afternoon. It will be the spicier version of our chicken sausage. We may also do a batch that has vino in it.

Bonster the Rocky Road are a Brownie Cupcake made from scratch. That was a prototype we made to sample but customers were buying them. We got some great feedback so we will be making another batch that will be available Wednesday morning maybe sooner. They will be a muffin size just like the other cupcakes. We will also have the Chocolate Strawberry & Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes as well. We will start making more varieties like I use to do in the near future. I will make a post when we have them available. The price will be $2.49-$2.99 depending on the ingredients used.

I was finally able to get some stuffed peppers at Tonini's. Jeez Louise, fantastico! I got the artichoke/spinach/ricotta version, and they were hands down the best tasting stuffed melrose peppers I have ever had. If you have not tried these bad boys, do yourself a favor and check them out. I also got a meatball kruncher, Italian sub, and some broccoli soup. I've had a lot of marginal broccoli, but this stuff was spot on. The meatballs were delicious, as was the sub. But everything paled in comparison to those peppers, no kidding. It's nice to have a place where you can feel like you can try something new, and usually you are going to be pleasantly surprised.
Now i am wantinb to try those peppers! Do they have them all the time?

We are but have had some issues with scheduling a date that works for all of us since it will happen at night after the store closes. Right now we are looking at Nov 19th & Dec 17th as possible dates but we may just wait until after the Holidays. I will definitely post when we are going to have them perform an investigation.

More love for your turkey, Tlcnurse. I stopped in last friday and got some. That stuff was just too good. Better than normal for some reason. I popped in tonight and got some more, and it was still warm from the oven. Ttrying to hold off from attacking it before dinner. Also, if you ever are looking for a new sammich, your turkey + that smoked mozzarella would be worth investigating, imo. We devoured some sammiches with your turkey and that cheese. Jr was all over them. If I had known you had smoked mozz before....reminds me...I forgot to ask for some tonight!
Thanks for the compliment. You are not the only one out there with a pet peeve about turkey LOL that is one reason we roast are own turkey. I can't stand the gelatinous loaf either. We do carry smoked mozzarella & occasionally get smoked provolone as well.
So if you were going to make a new signature sandwich with our turkey & smoked mozzarella what else would you put on it? Any feedback you can offer would be great.

That's because it is real food, and not some chemist's interpretation of turkey. Rectangular shaped, broth flavored jello is not turkey. A turkey is a bird, it does not com from a test tube.

Just breasts, I'd assume as well. It's still a mildly processed product in some way. It is obviously brined or seasoned in some way, but minimally processed, and not too salty usually. Good eats, in my book. I'd place it as better than any so called "Deli-Turkey" that I've ever had. And for the price, I'm very happy with it. Some places will have the sara lee lower sodium brand for 4.99/lb on sale which I'll pass up now for Tonini's at 5.99/lb, reg price. Tonini had that sneaky black friday sale and it was 3.99/lb, and that would have to go down as best value for product quality in the realm of deli turkey I have ever seen. (lol)
Crunchie - if you go back there for the turkey, for a special treat, get some of their smoked mozz cheese and make some sammiches. If you think you'd like the smoked mozz, man o man - good sammiches.
Actually it is a very high quality turkey breast that boneless with the natural skin & juices. We roast & season in house with our own blend of spices. it was the highest quality we could find out there that compared to the Columbus products we use to sell. We are glad that you all enjoy the turkey. We are very pleased with this product since it compares to much of the homemade items we sell.

We plan on having them all week. If she wants them in a larger quantity I would suggest placing an order. We have 36 coming today.
The Zepoles have arrived fresh from the bakery. The Custard ones are $1.49 & the Cannoli ones are $1.99

Tomorrow we will start making our Homemade Easter Calzone which will be available by the whole, 1/2 or quarter pie. We will be making cheese, Italian Ham & Salami & Italian Sausage.
We also have Tuma cheese available for the upcoming Holiday.
We just made a fresh batch of Easter Calzone so don't miss out it is going fast. We also have the Italian chocolate Easter eggs in various sizes for girls & boys. If you are in need of Chellino ricotta, sausage, beef, ravs or calzone be sure to place an order ahead of time to ensure you get what you need for Easter. Chellino has a tendency to run out every year so we want to make sure we order appropriately.
Tomorrow we will have our Homemade Slow Roasted BBQ Pulled Pork available. You can get a 6" Pulled Pork with or without coleslaw for $5.99 each or an 8" for $7.99 each.
We will also have our Homemade Greek Lemon Rice Soup.
We are making our Homemade Biscotti today hot & fresh out of the oven. We have Anise, Almond & Cherry available.
We will be making Del Vino Sausage for this weekend. Dave is working on a fresh Bratwurst recipe & may be trying that as well. We have expanded all of our specialty cheeses at the store & have pretty much anything you can think of so you won't need to go anywhere else for your cheese fix.
We are now serving gelato & ice from Lezza. It is exceptionally good so come in for a sample.
There are many new changes at the store. We think everyone will be pleasantly surprised. Dave is at the store everyday making new items & changes so stop on by.

Dave is making our Homemade BBQ Pulled Pork. It just went into the oven & will be ready tomorrow morning. We slow cook it for a very long time so it is tender. We sure to come in for a sandwich or better yet a Kruncher.

You know, too bad that you guys can't get booths set up at local faires (Westchester Fest, Villa Park, Brookfieldfest,etc) this summer to get more publicity. I know it can be costly tho. I tell EVERYONE about you guys so I hope to try to get more people in. I really love your store!
Thank You Very Much! We appreciate all the support. We are actually looking into doing some of the neighborhood fests. We anticipate being part of our Oktoberfest this year. It is true they are very costly but so is any kind of advertising lately. My nephew is building our website now so that we will have another avenue to promote our store. Be sure to come in and try the BBQ pulled pork. It is my Dad's recipe & it is really good.
Just an FYI...Dave is making fresh Homemade Bratwurst, Del Vino Sausage & a Gourmet Sicilian Sun Dried Tomato Sausage. It will be ready between Noon-1pm.

EMERGENCY EMERGENCY......................We lost our entire freezer in the store...Everything has thawed out. We have to count everything. The product is still good but we can't refreeze it. If anyone would like to have free sauce and soup etc, They can come in after 3 p.m. and take what ever they would like. Otherwise it is going in the garbage can.......This is the worst week ever. It's things like this that put little guys like me on the edge. Tell whoever you know to come in and get some stuff. I would rather have someone use it than throw it away.....Thank you again for your support....Dave

Were you able to cook a bunch of it off to save the loss?
Unfortunately not :( there was way too much. We could only cook so much & the pasta that was defrosted would all have to be cooked today. We had 250lbs of pasta alone. We had over 225 Quarts of frozen soup & sauce that we gave away. There was other items as well so we thought it was best to give it away rather than throw it away. We hope it did some good for others.
We want to sincerely Thank Everyone who came out today. So many of you were so kind we truly appreciate it. As a family owned business I feel the need to share with you all our sincere gratitude. It has been a very rough week for us. We have had our whole deli case break, oven break, freezers break in the front & the back, delivery van break & the toilet. We lost a huge amount of product along with it. It has truly been a horrible week for us as a business & a family. So we are feeling quite devastated & are not sure how we are going to survive this as a small business. Who would think all of this could happen at once. However, we believe that out of everything bad something good must come & that for us has been your support. It has been very comforting that so many of you have reached out to us. We truly appreciate all your support & sincerely mean this from the bottom of our hearts. May God Bless all of you!
We will have several of our frozen pastas in stock today. We will have jumbo ravs, mini ravs, homemade gnocchi & 8-finger. We also made all our sauces. There is none frozen only fresh. All of our deli meats & cheeses are getting re-stocked we received some yesterday & the day before. We will also be going to buy the rest this morning which includes some of our specialty cheeses & Carando products. A huge thank you to everyone who was so kind to us & offered their support.
