I have two (2) original Meet the Beatles! albums (only one with the jacket).  Both heavily scratched up.  I wonder if they are worth anything.  I also have many other Beatles albums.  Their music, even when sad, always makes me happy.  It's like being transported back to another time when anything seemed possible.  My youngest daughter who is 10 has been taking guitar lessons for awhile now and asked me if there was a song I wanted her to learn.  My response was "Blackbird".

Harrison co-wrote Badge with Clapton.

I love Clapton, but in terms of influence, in terms of playing a solo that fits and enhances a song, in terms of melody, Clapton, and Clapton would probably agree with this.

Check out Concert for George, which Clapton hosted, and you'll get a better feel for the player and writer.

   Most guys my age wanted to play in a band because of the Beatles no doubt. When Beatlemania hit a lot of guys wanted to learn to play guitar. But the guy who really made us want to play so bad that we all drove our parents nuts til they finally broke down and bought us our first guitar was Dave Davies of the Kinks. Once we heard his solos to All Day and All Of The Night and You Really Got Me, we were hooked.

Not us - the Beatles sustained us through the 60's - sold my electric rig in the early 70's for an acoustic (singer / songwriter era) - didn't pick up an electric again until the mid-90's, when I got into my Clapton phase.  Now I'm back to the 60's again!

I vote for George! Never a wasted or excess note, and he had a real, soft touch, baby.

It's hard to appreciate him after being assaulted by the bombastic, showy, hyper-technical, crowded leads of 70's guys like Jimmy Page. I couldn't stop listening to the Beatles cover of Buddy Holly's "Words of Love" a while back; the lead is ultra-simple, almost banal and repetitive, yet Harrison's deft touch, his "feel" on the bridge portion of the tune, and his timing are unbelievable!! 

In English, we say: "play guitar," whereas in Spanish it is: "toca guitarra" (touch the guitar); the Spanish phrase really describes how George Harrison played.

As a side note, Eric Clapton played the lead on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (White Album) and Paul McCartney played the frenetic, staccato lead on "Taxman" (Revolver).

One final memory of how great George was (for me); I was playing the entire "Sergeant Pepper..." album for my dad one night; he was nonplussed until the song "Within You, Without You" came on. He then folded his newspaper and turned to me, asking what this "divine music" was...
