LOL

A largish branch split off our Redbud tree in the storm the other night. Got it cut apart and in the yard waste container, but where it broke off is kind of a big open tear. Am I supposed to put something on that to seal it or something? I have a vague memory of my dad doing something like that when I was a kid. Thanks!

Sealing it is the safest thing to do.  Trim the remaining branch branch within a few inches of the trunk making it as flat as possible.  Keeps out bugs, prevents fungus, minimizes sap loss, and the tree heals faster.  I got my stuff at Menard's but I've seen it everywhere.
Why won't anyone believe it's not butter ?

I thought recent opinion was that sealing traps moisture and leads to rot.

That's correct. Cut it so it sheds water and leave it alone. So my Master Gardener wife tells me.

LOL

The part where it split off is under another branch and not terribly exposed.  I guess I'll keep an eye on it and leave it alone. Thanks for your help!
