This is a 1st for me, never had this problem before.  I have that blow-in insulation in the attic but I suppose that after 20 yrs. it's gotten packed down (gravity?).  I now have another chore for this spring.
Why won't anyone believe it's not butter ?

In the meantime before spring, you need to find a lady's pantyhose, fill it with that calcium chloride crap they use to deice the roads, tie it off and put it in the gutter where the ice dam has formed and lay something hard on top of it and it will melt.  I read about this in one my ladies magazines years past.  In case you have no pantyhose in your house, they sell them at Walgreens or perhaps CVS nowadays.
