Mary Karasek, a longtime civic and political figure in Berwyn, has passed away.  Mary was Berwyn City Treasurer during the Shaughnessy era in Berwyn.  Mary also led the charge against former District 201 superintendent Klingenberg in 1993 and was able to get a slate of change candidates elected to the D201 school board in the early 1990s. Mary was also elected to and served on the Morton College Board in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

I attended most city council meetings from 1995 to 2009 and Mary and her husband Ed were at almost every meeting.  Mary and Ed also were regular attendees at D100 board meetings.

While in America we have no royalty, I think a lot of people considered Mary and Ed the queen and king of Berwyn for their civic activism.

  May she rest in peace.
