I don't care how much poison you set out or how many traps you bait, unless something is done about people throwing their garbage all over the alleys you will always have a problem. As long as there is plenty of food, the rats will outbreed the poison.

The city of Berwyn and the Berwyn Township Health District are hoping to provide some relief to an increase of the rat population this summer.

The city and township have gone into a trial partnership with Awesome Pest Service Inc. of Berwyn for pesticide service.

According to an order form issued to the city from Awesome, it will check and treat all commercial alleys weekly, including railroad tracks, city parking lots and any area, including residential, that may have rodent problems.

The initial service charge will be $115 weekly, with a maximum amount of $5,520 for the summer months.

The cost will be split between the city and Health District, said Berwyn Mayor Michael O'Connor.

"We've been inundated with calls of rat infestation. ... We've got to do something because the phone has been ringing off the hook. We've got some hot spots that need taken care of," O'Connor said.

Robert Pechous, Berwyn Township supervisor and president of the Berwyn Township Board of Health, said his office has also received numerous calls from residents complaining about rat infestation. The complaints include infestation in alleys, under porches and garages, in garbage containers and even inside homes.
