Preparing for the next economic tsunami.

« on: October 16, 2009, 10:31:14 PM »

Got a flyer from Cozzi Closeouts, Discount Grocer in North Riverside.

It claims to have prices that INSANE!!  (inside joke)

Has anyone heard of them?  Is it worth going to?

Discount grocer...food isn't something I really want discounted.  To me, that means poor quality.

We are on the same wavelength there... I never heard of a "Discount Grocer".  Do they sell almost expired food... or what.

Here's a crazy idea. Maybe they just charge a fair price instead of the Jewel/Dominicks ripoff system where you pay more for the same or less quality. I've never been to Cozzi, but I would at least check them out before I started knocking them.

I drove by and it looks like a dollar store from the outside.
I'm not sure I want to pay for closeout food at any price. What does closeout mean? Is the food days from expiration?
Besides Jewel & Dominicks are having a price wars, Tony's is fairly prices and we have Aldi's near-by.

ALDI...

IMO, Aldi is a really great find.  Once you can get past that almost everything in the store are the Aldi brand names, you will put that aside for the savings.

The only things I wouldn't buy, that I normally buy, are the cheeses and only because I prefer really good cheese if you're going to have cheese.

Now all there stores do run with only two employees, so if you think yours is crowded, find another because they're everywhere.

I went in to Cozzi's today.  Everything that I purposefully looked at was expired - not about to expire but expired.  Frozen cheese that had an expiration date in June.  Cereal and snacks with "best before" dates in September for the most recent.  Very questionable.

Again, those are just the items that I purposefully looked at.

I think we would be surprised at how many people eat all
kinds of expired  foods , and don't think any thing about it, or yet
even get sick from the consumption of it!
Not me, I absolutely have a hard time even eating left overs the
next day.
I read an article though, about some very poor countries that the people
who live in these counties buy old food, cheese, bread and that's the
normal for them.
I count my blessings every day!

If they keep raising my taxes... I'll have to start wrestling the 90 year grandma who got no COLA increase to ground for the expired bacon.   Cry

Ahhhhh, it's always about the bacon.... Wink

Here's an excerpt from a 2008 report from ABC News regarding expiration dates.

There are almost no laws governing the dates on food, with two big exceptions: milk and baby food. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration says when food is stored properly, it will keep its quality and be safe to eat after the posted date.

I went to Cozzi Discount Grocery Store 7918 W. 26th St., No. Riverside. They stock items that are past the code date (which she told me is different than expire date, but I didn't ask how) or if the manufacturer changes pkging, they get that stuff. Bought botttles of Juicy Juice for .50 ea that had a date on it for 5 days ago, for a friend baby food 12 jars @1.99 which has a date of next month, Gerber baby rice cereal, good date, $1.99,  Tues. no tax day. Everything 100% guaranteed. Maurice Lennell outlet as well, asst pk 1.50.  Times are tough, and if you have the time, I think it's worth going through the aisles and seeing if there's something there that will save you money and still is safe.

Saw the sign that it is a Maurice Lenell cookie outlet. I'm going to check it out as I'm a Lenell cookie fan. Love the pinwheels. Years ago, when I worked in Chicago, the Lenell cookie truck would pull up on Homan Ave., Friday afternoon, and sell cookies by the bucket. I think it was $2.
