Armed robbery reported at Berwyn bank

Posted Dec 21, 2009 @ 11:40 AM
Berwyn, IL —

A woman was robbed at gunpoint outside a bank Dec. 15, police said.

Berwyn police officers responded to Fifth Third Bank, 7112 W. Cermak Road, at about 12:30 a.m. Dec. 15. The victim, an employee at Dollar Tree, 7147 W. Cermak Road, told police she was depositing the store's cash at the bank when a man wearing a ski mask and black jacket ran from around the corner of the bank with a rifle, police said.

As the man approached, the victim began running and threw the bag containing $3,500 in the bushes in front of the bank, police said.

The victim got in her car as the suspect approached and pointed the rifle at her face and demanded money. The victim told the suspect she did not have it and pointed out where she threw it. The victim told police the suspect checked the bushes, found the bag containing the money and ran from the scene.

Officers stopped a man who matched the description of the suspect shortly after the robbery, but he was not the suspect.

I love that this happened 12/15 and was reported in the life on 12/21.

I recall a very, very similar "robbery" happening sometime late last year -- same bank and also an employee of the dollar tree involved.  At the time, I suspected that this "robbery" was prearranged by the DT employee and the "robber"... think about it.

Here's the story from the Berwynpoliceblotter.com:

Robbed of the day's take

November 2, 2008, 9:36 PM

A 53-year-old woman, manager of the dollar store in Cermak Plaza, told police she was robbed in the parking lot of Fifth Third Bank, 7112 Cermak. The woman said she parked in the west parking lot of the bank, exited her van and pulled out two bags of cash. One bag contained $4,000, the other $233.  The women tucked the bags inside her coat and began to shut the van door when a man grabbed her.  The offender shoved her against the van, grabbed the money and fled on foot northward.  The offender, she said, was a husky six-foot male white, dressed in black.
If you are not part of the solution -- you are part of the problem.

I agree, LL.  It reads awfully suspicious.

Men from Berwyn, Chicago charged with taking car at Oak Park gas station
Elmwood Park man injured trying to stop theft of his car

Tribune staff report
January 1, 2010

An Elmwood Park man was dragged about 40 feet and suffered a broken ankle as he tried to thwart the theft of his car outside an Oak Park gas station about 5 a.m. Saturday in the 6100 block of North Avenue in Oak Park. A Berwyn man and a Chicago man later were arrested and charged in the incident.

The Elmwood Park man had left his Chevy Caprice unlocked and running when he went into the station. He noticed two men approaching the car and ran out to stop them. As they drove the car away he was dragged before being thrown, breaking an ankle, according to Oak Park Police Cmdr. Len Jorgensen.

Chicago police soon spotted the stolen car and followed it back into Oak Park. The two men inside bailed out of the car and ran but were soon caught after a yard-to-yard search. Nelson O. Pacheco, 34, of the 2100 block of South Highland Avenue in Berwyn was arrested in the 1800 block of South Maple Avenue in Oak Park, and Louis A. Lopez, 18, of 1800 block of West Patterson Avenue in Chicago was arrested in the 800 block of Marengo Avenue in Forest Park. Both men are charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking.

  Man is robbed at knifepoint

January 22, 2010

A Berwyn man was robbed at knifepoint of his wallet and $300 by three men wearing ski masks near 16th Street and Euclid Avenue Jan. 12. The 22-year-old victim told police he was walking to a store at about 11:22 a.m. when the men jumped out of a car, waved a knife at him and held his hands behind his back while going through his pockets

Berwyn Patsy

I often wonder, what happens if after they go through his pockets, and he's only
got 3 bucks on him??  Do most people carry that much cash at any age, let
alone at  22?  Wonder what store he was headed into?

EC

Sounds like some one knew he had that amount of money on him, for whatever reason.

Crunchie

If it actually happened, the robbers are pretty stupid. Mugging a young guy at lunchtime in a busy area? Hard to believe, IMO.

Good question.  Certainly not La Paisita.
Berwyn's Violet Shop to buy $300 worth of bouquets? LOL
Tototlan to get a buttload of flank steak for a party?
$300 worth of vending machine junk at Stryker Lanes?
Paying dues at the Italian American Club?
6 cartons of cigarettes at the Marathon?
I've got it -
Downpayment on a casket at J. Nosek & Sons!

Well if they got away with it and don't get caught... I wouldn't say it was "stupid".  ;D
